The Centro Asturiano, the 1927 building that houses the universal art collection of the Museum of Fine Arts, is an incredible, eclectic structure facing Central Park. It radiates luxury, thanks in part to its staircase finished in Carrara marble. This has been the setting for many Cuban film shoots. The grand ballroom is filled with artwork. The skylight above the staircase is an enormous stained glass image recounting the arrival of Columbus in the Americas. At midday, the light coming through it is absolutely magical.

The National Museum of Fine Arts of Havana (Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes de La Habana) in Havana, is a museum of Fine Arts that exhibits Cuban art collections from the colonial times up to contemporary generations. There are now two buildings belonging to the Museum, one dedicated to Cuban Arts in the Palacio de Bellas Artes and one dedicated to the Universal Arts, in the Palacio del Centro Asturiano. The Palacio de Bellas Artes (Palace of Fine Arts) is dedicated exclusively to housing Cuba Art collections. Spanning the 17th and 19th centuries has rooms devoted to landscape, religious subjects and the Costumbrismo narrative scenes of Cuban life. Gallery devoted to the 1970s is marked by a preponderance of Hyperrealism and the latest generation of Cuban artists whose works all reflect the strong symbolic imagery that has been prevalent in recent decades. The most notable works are those of René Portocarrero and Wifredo Lam. A modernist sculpture by noted Cuban artist Rita Lonja stands outside the main entrance. Other Cuban artists on display include Leopoldo Romañach, Víctor Manuel, Federico Beltrán Masses, Rafael Lillo, Jose A. Bencomo Mena, Manuel Vega, Domingo Ramos, Guillermo Collazo, Mariano Rodriguez, Carlos Enríquez Gómez, and Jorge Arche. It's located in Palace of the Asturian Center - San Rafael, e/Zulueta y Monserrate, Old Havana, Havana, Cuba 10200.

The 30,000 plus pieces that form the Cuban collection is divided into six basic sections: Colonial Art (from the 16th to the 19th century), with a room dedicated to magnificent landscapes; Turn of the Century (1894-1927), with academic pieces where the emergence of modernism is noticeable; Emergence of Modern Art (1927-1938) and Consolidation of Modern Art (1938-1951), with avant-garde pieces; Other Perspectives of Modern Art (1951-1963), featuring mainly abstract pieces; and Contemporary Art (1959-present day), with works that follow today’s codes and trends.

Spread over two campuses, the Bellas Artes is arguably the finest art gallery in the Caribbean. The 'Arte Cubano' building contains the most comprehensive collection of Cuban art in the world, while the 'Arte Universal' section is laid out in a grand eclectic palace overlooking Parque Central, with exterior flourishes that are just as impressive as the art within. The Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes – Arte Cubano displays purely Cuban art and, if you're pressed for time, is the better of the duo. Works are displayed in chronological order starting on the 3rd floor and are surprisingly varied.
