The palace of Zakros,the fourth largest of the Minoan palaces,was located at a protected bay of the Eastern Crete,an area of strategic importance to the trade and communication with Egypt and Near East.It is also possible that Zakros was one of the major bases of the Minoan fleet in Crete.From the site of Zakros came some of the masterpieces of Minoan art.The wealth of artifacts unearthed and the fact that many of them were made by rare,as well as imported raw materials,such as ivory,faience and copper,indicate the economical growth and vigour of the palace and its significance as the administrative and cult centre of the area.It is the only palace left with its treasury not looted,offering several masterpieces of art to the archaeologists.It was built in 1900BC and was destroyed permanently in 1450BC just like all the other palaces in Crete.It has 8000sq.m area and was built similarly to Knossos and Phaestus.The palace has a central courtyard,a labyrinth and a temple.The valuable findings (leaves of gold,ivory,jewelry,vases,etc),imply that there was a close relationship with many other cities in the Mediterranean Sea.The archaeological site is open to public but the most important findings are kept in the Museum of Heraklion.

Zakros is located in a remote area of eastern Crete, 45km southeast of Sitia. Communication with the Mid East was faster from here during the Minoan Age, thus the Minoans built here the administrative center of Eastern Crete, with an important port. The findings are very rich (sheets of gold, ivory, jewelry, pottery, etc.) and prove the close relationship of the city with the ports of Cyprus, Egypt and the Middle East. The Palace of Zakros was built at the outlet of the imposing Gorge of the Deads and is the fourth largest Minoan palace that has been excavated. The region is full with archaeological treasures, and even the name of the gorge of the Deads is taken after the preminoan graves found on its sides. The site is visitable, although most findings are kept in museums of Heraklion, Sitia and Agios Nikolaos. The palace covers an area of 4.5 acres, while the surrounding settlements covered a total area of 8 acres. The excavations started in 1900 by the British School of Archaeology and continued till 1940, bringing to light many Minoan houses and objects. But he who first discovered the palace in 1961 was Nikolaos Platon, after seeing three golden objects from Zakros from the collection of a doctor. The palace at Zakros is one of the most important archaeological discoveries, considering that it is the only Minoan palace not looted and found with its treasury vault intact!

Η Ζάκρος βρίσκεται σε μια απομονωμένη περιοχή της Ανατολικής Κρήτης, 45χλμ νοτιοανατολικά της Σητείας. Εδώ η επικοινωνία με την Ανατολή ήταν γρηγορότερη κατά τη Μινωική Εποχή κι, έτσι, οι Μινωίτες φρόντισαν να κτίσουν εδώ το διοικητικό κέντρο της Ανατολικής Κρήτης με ένα σημαντικό λιμάνι. Τα ευρήματα που έχουν βρεθεί ήταν αρκετά πλούσια (φύλλα χρυσού, ελεφαντόδοντα, κοσμήματα, αγγεία κλπ), ενώ υποδεικνύουν και τη στενή σχέση της πόλης με τα λιμάνια της Κύπρου, της Αιγύπτου και της Μέσης Ανατολής. Το παλάτι της Ζάκρου ήταν κτισμένο στην έξοδο του επιβλητικού Φαραγγιού των Νεκρών και είναι το τέταρτο μεγαλύτερο μινωικό παλάτι που έχει ανασκαφεί μετά την Κνωσό, τη Φαιστό και τα Μάλια. Η ευρύτερη περιοχή είναι διάσπαρτη με αρχαιολογικούς θησαυρούς, ενώ ακόμη και το όνομα του φαραγγιού των Νεκρών οφείλεται στους προμινωικούς τάφους που βρίσκονται στα τοιχώματα του. Ο αρχαιολογικός χώρος είναι επισκέψιμος, ενώ τα περισσότερα ευρήματα φυλάσσονται στα Αρχαιολογικά Μουσεία Ηρακλείου, Σητείας και Αγίου Νικολάου.
