The Neratze mosque and next to it the Minaret tower from the Turkish occupation on the road Em. Vernadou 2. Behind you will find Mikrasiaton Square to sit and relax. During the Venetian times the Mosque "Neratzes" used to be a church named ‘Santa Maria'', dedicated to the Mary of Augustans. The little chapel on its west side was dedicated to the body of Christ. In 1657, the Turks turned the temple into a mosque named ‘Gazi Housein" or "Neratze", which also served as an Ottoman seminary. In 1890, the mechanic G. Daskalakis added a large minaret with two stone-made balconies to the building. Today the Mosque "Neratzes" is used as a conservatoire.

Also known as Conservatoire (due to its present use), Neratze Mosque is one of the most impressive and well-preserved monuments in Retymno Old Town, reflecting a part of the history of the city.
The Neratze mosque on the corner of Ethniki Antistaseos and Vernaridou was known as the Church of Santa Maria during Venetian times. It used to be part of an Augustinian friary. From the original building only the East and the North side survived. The elaborate entrance on the North side gives one an impression of the building's original splendour. During Turkish occupation the roof was replaced by three small domes. In 1890 a minaret was added. The mosque is now mainly used for lectures, concerts and theatre performances.

The Neratze Mosque in Rethymno, also known as Gazi Hussein Mosque, is found close to Petichaki square. Initially it was a Venetian church dedicated to Santa Maria and later on, it became an Augustinian Monastery. However, when the Turks dominated the town in 1657, their leader, Gazi Hussein Pasha, turned it into a mosque.
