This place is only 8 kilometers away from our farm house. When you walk around, it feels like you are in an open air museum. Walk, watch and enjoy.

Up for a sporty challenge? Rent a bike and cycle via the villages of Durgerdam and Uitdam to Marken (30 km single way). You can bring your bike for free on the ferry. Marken is a traditional fisherman's village. Tip: don't choose to ride out on a windy day, but take public transport instead.

Marken Distance: 68 km The former island of Marken is located in the province of Noord-Holland at the Markermeer and the Gouwzee. It has been a ,tourist attraction for at least a century. Marken's striking traditional costume has contributed to this. Until the arrival of the Afsluitdijk, Marken was a village ánd an island in the Zuiderzee. In 1957, a dike was built between Marken and the mainland, causing it to lose its status as an island. The Marken peninsula is now a popular tourist destination. Almost the entire peninsula has a protected cityscape and there are several national monuments. The most famous building on Marken is the lighthouse known as “Het Paard van Marken” ( The Horse of Marken) Many tourists already know their way to the former island, because of the monumental wooden houses and colorful costumes. In 1957 the island was connected to Monnickendam with a dyke. Characteristic for Marken are the wooden houses on stilts. Even older are the so-called "yards", artificial elevations on which people lived.

Former Island in IJsselmeer. Very nice to walk through the small alleys and streets and visit the old harbour. Great to visit by verry/boat from Volendam.
