Very well-run National Park provides free tours of the Custom House (where Nathaniel Hawthorne once worked), the Friendship, and information at the Orientation Center.
Nathaniel Hawthorne worked there when he wrote The Scarlet Letter. In fact the prologue is all about his slacker co-workers. I recommend reading the prologue before taking the tour.
Built in 1819 to house the offices of the U.S. Customs Service, Salem collected millions of dollars of taxes on incoming cargo, providing vital financial support for the new United States government. The building was also the workplace of the famous author Nathaniel Hawthorne. The Public Stores and Scale House have exhibits showcasing global trade in Salem
