It's a bit out of the way, but what a sight to behold. Rising over 500 feet into the air, Devil's tower is a singularity in the world.
The remains of a dormant volcano's core, Devil's Tower was formed millennia ago when the softer rock of the outer cone of the volcano eroded away, leaving the harder, granite volcanic plug standing by itself. It isn't even a solid piece of rock, but a collection of hexagons gripping to one another by means of friction. If you're lucky, you'll see a spectacular boulder fall as some of these hexagons fall away.
Sacred to the Native Americans, hiking the trail around the mountain will bring you a sense of spirituality few other places can.

Black Elk Peak is the highest point on Earth between the Swiss Alps and the Rocky Mountains - for you East Coasters, that means this rises higher than the Appalachians! A moderate hike, there is a 3 mile trail which leads from the beaches of Sylvan lake to an old Fire Lookout Tower atop the peak, from which you can see Mt. Rushmore and a stunning view of the rest of the Hills.

A museum all about the prehistory of the hills, they found an intact mammoth here! Wonderful museum that takes you back to a time when the Hills were pure and untouched.
