Towering high above the treetops and juxtaposed against limitless skies, Mount Rushmore is an impressive tribute to freedom and democracy in America. The awe-inspiring granite sculpture features 60-foot faces of four U.S. presidents who played an integral role in the birth, expansion, development…

National Park
“Take in sweeping vistas of otherworldly landscapes and stunning panoramas of vividly colored buttes, pinnacles, spires and canyons at Badlands National Park. The 244,000-acre park—once known as Mako Sica (a Lakota phrase meaning “land bad”)—features eroded land formations that reveal multicolored layers of various rock types: shale (purple and yellow), sand and gravel (tan and gray), iron oxides (red and orange) and volcanic ash (white). While you’re here, drive the Badlands Loop State Scenic Byway and keep your eyes open for an array of wildlife, including eagles, coyotes, pronghorn and bison. Since being given more room to roam, the resident conservation herd numbers around 1,200. Spot individuals and small groups along the park’s Sage Creek Rim Road. Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep were introduced to Badlands National Park more than 50 years ago. They fit right into the park’s rugged terrain, steep canyons and grassy meadows. The overlooks at both Pinnacles and Cedar Pass tend to grant good views—just look for the species’ large, curved horns! Nearby Towns: Interior (1.5 miles); Wall (7.5 miles); Kadoka (23 miles)”

Lodging
“This is a must stop if you like steak dinner! Historic Bavarian Inn, serving dinner at 5 pm. Get there by 4-4:30 to get on the list, and expect a 60-90 minute wait most nights. There’s just one choice for dinner (steak and potatoes with salad), but it’s a bargain worth waiting for! Try a selection from the enormous desert menu.”

“The best breakfast in town! Just get there early to beat the crowd as seating is limited. Head Chef, Ben Klinkel, has really poured his heart into this place and you can tell. The food is exquisite. ”

History Museum
“Delve into the history of the Native peoples of the Black Hills, seeing their hardships and struggles in a way not depicted by modern history books. Listen to their stories, immerse yourself in their culture, and come away a better person for having done so. ”
