The perimeter path is maintained by the Maine Bureau of Parks and Lands. An outhouse is also available in the parking lot. This easy trail circles Mackworth Island and offers excellent views of Casco Bay. The trail surface is wood chips and packed soil, which may be slippery when wet, but the terrain is generally level, with moderate slopes not exceeding 10%. There are no steps or other major barriers to wheelchairs on the main loop. Small side trails follow steep slopes to the shore and may be inaccessible to some visitors. A new staircase with handrail has been added to a side trail on the south side of the island.

Morse hired Gustave Herter, a German trained cabinetmaker and interior designer to decorate his summer retreat. Herter was one of the most influential designers in the United States during the second half of the 19th century. Today, Victoria Mansion is the only Herter commission that survives intact. Richly gilded surfaces, intricate plasterwork, enormous mirrors, and sumptuous fabrics combined to create lavish spaces of a palatial scale.

Since then, we've expanded our charter offerings to include half-day island excursions, lunch and dinner trips to island restaurants, and even onboard dining experiences with a local chef. Hop aboard Kismet for a short cruise around Casco Bay. You can expect to see lighthouses, wildlife, and forts scattered among the many islands off the coast of Portland. Looking to see something specific? Just ask!
Cruises are about 90 minutes long and can take up to 12 passengers. There is a cooler on board stocked with Maine’s best craft beer, wine, and canned cocktails for purchase along with complimentary bottled water. You are welcome to bring snacks and soft drinks to enjoy during the cruise.
