My High Altitude Park
A beautiful place to stretch your legs, take a deep breath of the cool mountain air, and use the restroom facilities. Children can play at the new playground and equipment, and purchase a cold drink at the vending machine at the ceder log building. This park is now called the Guilbert Kahele Recreation Area Park.

The Visitor Information Center is located at the 9,200 foot elevation level on the slope of Mauna Kea Mountain. When you drive here you will be above the clouds. Restrooms open 24 hours daily. May be closed due to the COVID Restrictions. Children are not allowed to go beyond this altitude to the summit of the mountain due to lack of stratosphere.

It is like hiking through the Yellow Stone Park. When you get to the Steam Vent at the Parking Area, stand in the steam plume for a minute and enjoy a nice steam bath. Also a short walk to the Kilauea Caldera viewing area.
