Thanh Nien Road has long become the meeting point of the couples to watch the sunset besides the windy lake. It is considered as one of the most beautiful and cleanest roads in the capital city with spacious roadway and rows of green trees on two sides of pavement. Seen from above, Thanh Nien Road looks like a bridge covered green trees.

It was built in 1932 and originally named Church of Martyrs (French: Église des Martyrs) by the French administration of Indochina aspart of Hanoi’s urban plan supervised by Ernest Hébrard. Nestled under the shade of old trees at the intersection of Phan Dinh Phung and Nguyen Bieu Street, Nha Tho Cua Bac is a nice destination for an afternoon walk.

Known as Hanoi’s largest freshwater lake, West Lake is a huge body of water – it has a circumference of 17km – and there are plenty of historic places of interest, stylish restaurants, cafes, and nightlife venues that are worth exploring along the shoreline. Such a beautiful place to while away an afternoon: there are boats for hire and lunch on a floating restaurant makes a novel dining option

Set on a small hill near the northern corner of Truc Bach lake, Cau Nhi temple is recognizable with a story connected with the time when King Ly Cong Uan transfered his capital. Ly Cong Uan was born in the year of Dog (974 a.C). From what has been said in traditional belief, dog is able to expel evil souls and defend the land. Some days before Ly Cong Uan moved his capital, a bitch came with purpose of tiding up her place for giving birth. Right in this place, people dedicated a temple.

Lined with flame trees, Truc Bach Lake has plenty going on around its banks and no shortage of places to stop for a coffee, beer or lunch, so is worth a wander if you’ve time. During the 18th century the Trinh lords built a palace on the lakeside; it was later transformed into a reformatory for wayward royal concubines, who were condemned to spend their days weaving pure white silk. That's why it's named Truc Bach.

Arts & Culture

Bustling with pho cuon vendors with waves of visitors coming nightly for street food, Ngu Xa island has etched its place in the culinary culture of the capital. Yet few people realise that this island in Truc Bach Lake — now separated from the mainland by two short bridges — was once the home of the bronze-casting workers of Ngu Xa Village.

The Imperial Citadel of Thang Long, is an intriguing relic of Vietnam’s history and, signifying its historical and cultural importance, was made a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2010. Also known as the Hanoi Citadel, many artefacts and items dating back to between the 6th and 20th centuries were excavated in 2004, including foundations of old palaces, ancient roads, ponds and wells. On top of these discoveries, archaeologists also found bronze coins, ceramics and pottery from China and many places in Asia, all of which demonstrate a close trading relationship in the area. Visitors should head for the display room that features interesting excavated items and mock-ups of the citadel itself.

Tổ Chim Xanh, Vietnamese for ‘Bluebird’s Nest,’ is every bit as cute as it sounds, with a cozy little library, a corner for live music performances, and a fantastic rooftop terrace. As pleasant as the ground floor is, the highlight is the spacious rooftop terrace from where you can unashamedly spy on the surrounding residents. The rooftop is dwarfed and encircled by various Soviet era apartment buildings brought to life by the colorful hanging clothing that the inhabitants have put out to dry.

This bakery-cum-tearoom isn’t quite like anything else in Hanoi. The extensive dessert menu and friendly staff are reason enough to come, but its the wonderfully cluttered and poky interior that takes the cake in this hideaway. Sitting in Tiem Banh Nho Noi is a bit like sitting in a mine. Not a real mine of course, but one of those fake mines that you find in museums and theme parks that are trying to give visitors a lifelike mine experience.

Another vintage-like local restaurant with security guys wearing old Viet Minh style uniform and waiters/waitress wearing local outfit, 1946 oozes history. The ground floor dining room is elegantly set out. Old crockery complete the feeling of being thrown back in time. Hidden away on a side street, this place is popular with local Hanoians. The foods, which are beautifully represent the range of Northern cuisine and is well made to the taste of most visitors.
