There are several hikes you can do from here, but some are still closed. Park in the Devastation trial parking lot. At the back of the lot is a paved trail to the right, this is "Devastation Trial" itself. It leads to an overlook of the Kilauea Iki crater. Don't walk out to the left, the ground is unstable . Walk out of the lot, turn right, and jike down the closed road to see road damage a get very close to the new crater. This is now a fantastic view. You can exit the lot and walk down the side of the road down hill a bit and come to a trail. You can park on the side of the road but watch the curb, it drops off. The lerighside trail is closed, but the left side goes into forest.

The sulfur banks are a geothermal feature of steam vents. The vapor exiting the vents is high is sulfer and it crystalizes on the surface. The area reminds me of Yellowstone. It is paved and has boardwalks. The trail starts near the visitor center, and leads to the Steaming Bluffs.

The steaming bluffs offer a great view of the caldera at a steaming cliff with many steaming vents. From there you can walk back to the visitor center on a basically level trail with stairs at the end, or along the Iliahi trail with slopes downward. Both of these routes intersect with the Halemau'mau Trail.

The trail starts at Volcano House. Descend into the caldera itself, through a fern forest, then come back up the same trail. Its a 400 ft. elevation change with some stairs and rocky footing.

Descend into the Kilauea Iki Crater and walk across lava formed in 1959. A truly spectacular hike. Park at the Kilauea Iki parking lot and take the trail to your left to get to the Thurston Lava Tube parking area (which is currently closed to parking). The trail head is near the crosswalk.

This trail haeds over a lava field to a large area dense with ancient Hawaiian petroglyphs. It's a hot sunny hike, so wear a hat or better yet, bring an umbrella. It close to the end of Chain of Craters Road.

This is a pleasant trail in a place locally called "bird park". Its a loop that goes uphill a bit. Its close to the "tree molds", which are large holes in the ground formed by lava flowing around big trees, cooling around them, with the trees burning out at a later time. There is also Mauna Loa Strip Road, which winds for 10 miles up the slopes of Mauna Loa to a lookout. I would call this area a second-tier set of sights.

At the top of Mauna Loa Strip road is a lookout and trailhead. Its one of the routes to the summit of Mauna Loa (that would be serious back country camping at high elevation requiring a permit). The look out overlooks Kilauea Caldera and the surrounding landscape.

You access this off of Rt. 11. The trail leads to a shelter protecting footprints left in the ash during an eruption in 1790. The footprints can be hard to find, and the trail is really hot and sunny, so this can be skipped if your time is limited. Not recommended for children.
