Food Scene

Excellent Mexican hidden away on Thistle Street, a close second to Bodega. Brilliant authentic taco's with daily specials and the prices are a steal. I usually go here if the weathers not great, as it's just minutes from the front door. First come first served, so get over early to book a table and then if its busy wander across the street to Bon V for some drinks, while you wait for a table (they'll come over and get you or call).

My absolute favourite! Influential (soon to be Michelin star) restaurant, prides itself on using only the best local, seasonal produce and makes a great place for a special treat. Also carries excellent wine. Taster menu is usually around £65 and you can add wine pairing.

Edinburgh's first dedicated taqueria serving fresh Mexican, Asian and American-inspired flavours, wrapped in a corn tortilla. VERY reasonably priced Mexican fusion restaurant, I cant say I've ever had a bad taco here, and I'm always keen to try John's new dessert. As if it couldn't get any better it's also BYOB, so i challenge you not to like it! Quite an intimate venue so best to tick this one off early! 15/20 mins walk from Albyn Place.

I don't know how anybody stumbles upon this bar/restaurant, as its down a narrow close, but it then opens up into a huge trendy space with seats outside. Well worth seeking it out if you're on the royal mile, food is excellent or if you're just thirsty there's an incredible selection of drinks! A covered area outside too which is always good with the Edinburgh weather!

Just off Royal Mile and famed for its burgers. Good selection of beers and wine, a cut above your average pub.

Excellent Middle Eastern Cuisine, at the top of Leith Walk; a stone's throw from the east end of Princess Street/George Street. Reasonably priced and great for groups.

Because you can't say you've been to Edinburgh without at least getting a picture outside. A no-brainer.

Drinks & Nightlife

Right across the street. Award winning cocktail bar (with some great beers on tap too). Of the moment New York style prohibition theme (looks like a barbershop from outside). Mixed crowd and cool atmosphere.

My favorite pub on the Royal Mile. Good selection of local guest ales and friends play live acoustic sets here on the weekends, so it's usually a great atmosphere!

You're spoilt for choice for hipster cocktail bars on Queen Street, but this place has stood the test of time. Candle-lit, speakeasy basement bar that plays good music (mostly hiphop). Easy to miss (it's downstairs)

A great place to start the night (especially if you can get seat outside in the late sun). At this retro bar the cocktails are inventive (and often deceptively strong!). If its raining there's a pool table downstairs!

Eclectic mix of music but always a good party! Small cave-like venue in the 'Cowgate', has brilliant acoustics, and is rarely quiet. Good for Rock, Dance and Indie live music and DJs (check listings for latest info).

Brilliant craft beer bar with a wide selection of different beer taps. Cool beer hall style interior. Serves large 'growlers' to share and serves food late.

Parks & Nature

Great for lying in the sun, admiring the scenery, going for a quick jog away from traffic, or just having some quiet time. Only local residents have keys so well worth a look while you have access, and never gets too crowded. Many people book hotels close to queen street for weddings just to gain access to the Queen Street gardens. A hidden (exclusive) gem.

Shopping

A lot less touisty than Princess Street and George street and just 5 minutes walk from Albyn Place. Local boutique shops sell everything from curated men's clothing to specialist cheese shops. The Sunday market is not to be missed with lots of great local produce.

Arts & Culture

Lots of ever changing interesting exhibitions hosted in a beautiful building on 'The Mound'. If art's your thing, you'll want to tick this off.
