This sacred home of Pele, Hawaiian Goddess of the Volcano, also contains the most active and accessible volcanoes in the world. You'll find a museum and a visitor's center to help you interpret the Big Island's unique and dynamic volcanic environment. The park's eruption update telephone number is (808) 967-7977. There's a park admission fee per vehicle. Directions: The entrance is well marked south of Hilo on Route 11.

This small 12-acre zoo is the only one in the United States located in a rainforest. The Pana’ewa zoo is also a botanical garden and is filled with orchids, bamboos, 100 varieties of palms, and a water garden.
