It’s Japan meets New York, with authentic Japanese ingredients, calligraphy, and wood everywhere. It’s owned by a gentleman named Kenta Goto, who was once head bartender at one of the best bars in the world, Pegu Club. It’s intimate, but not empty, and a great place to take a date. The food is as innovative as the drinks. You’ll want to take a photo of your drinks before you drink them. They’re beautiful, with ingredients like lemongrass and miso.

Kenta Goto opened this contemporary Lower East Side izakaya in 2015 after years of bartending at the trailblazing Pegu Club, which closed in 2020. Here, Goto has crafted a list of eye-opening cocktails highlighting Japanese flavors and spanning all tastes. This place just took home Best New Cocktail Bar honors at the 2016 Bar Awards in Time Out NY , when it triumphed over a daunting pool of far more seasoned competition this year. Few New York bars have emerged as strongly as this two-year-old Lower East Side cocktail den; even fewer have bypassed the typical growing pains and charged straight to greatness. That’s thanks not only to Goto’s well-honed skills and artful attention to detail but also to the solidification of the bar’s truly singular, hyperpersonal near-selfless level of hospitality. Goto created a joint that’s, deservedly, the new big man on campus.
