Penicuik House perfectly embodies the ideals of Palladian architecture in its simplicity and symmetry

Stop for some coffee and cake within a beautiful setting. The highly reviewed café also serves a range of soups, sandwiches and desserts using locally sourced produce within a very modest kitchen. The café sits within the grounds of Penicuik House, a former grand estate house with only the shell of the building now surviving. The 18th-century palladian mansion was built on the site of an earlier house by Sir James Clerk, 3rd Baronet. It was destroyed by a major fire in 1899 and a major restoration was completed in 2014 by G Brown Stonemasons. After dropping the car at the parking area, the café is a short walk through the beautiful grounds. Within such a breathtaking setting, it is one of the best kept secrets in the area.

Penicuik House is located 10 miles south of Edinburgh, set in one of the finest designed landscapes in the country. This special place has been home to the same family since 1654 and today we are on an exciting journey to transform it into a rural and cultural destination for visitors from far and wide to enjoy.

Sadly the cafe is no longer, but the grounds and intriguing ruined house make for beautiful walks.
