Catch the season right between August and September and you will see millions of turtles arrive to lay their eggs. Months later the baby turtles emerge from the sand to make their way to the ocean. A wonder of nature. Playa la Flor is also a great place to go for a hike.

This is the perfect beach to see turtles. There is an entrance fee and it is protected by the military for poachers, etc. It costs around 200 cordobas, but well worth it. There are many tours that leave from town, which provide transport and a guide to explain how to not disturb the turtles. We recommend booking a tour - don't want to be that tourist who accidentally blinds a turtle! Tours generally go for around $25 USD per person.

La Flor beach is a sanctuary of nature. Nicaragua is blessed with several beaches where the Olive Ridley turtles come to lay there eggs. These sea turtles weigh about 45 kg and are spread throughout the world. There are nesting sites in Asia and Africa as well, but despite this dispersion the Olive Ridley population is threatened and in some places endangered with extinction. In Nicaragua tThe Olive Ridley turtles come to the beach en masse, during so called arribadas in which thousands of turtles arrive at the same time to lay their eggs. This way, the hatchlings will swarm the beach in huge numbers and in doing so they increase their chance of survival. Wildlife Reserve La Flor measures more than 3,000 hectares and is located 22 kilometers south of San Juan del Sur. It is one of the places in Nicaragua where you can observe the arribadas of Olive Ridley turtles.

See SEA TURTLES at La Flor Beach Natural Reserve - Nicaragua’s most amazing wildlife reserves. You maybe even be lucky enough to partake in the release of Olive Ridley baby sea turtles from the thousands of turtles that come to lay their eggs here. This reserve is set up to protect these baby turtles and give them the best chance at survival!
