One of my favorite places to visit several times a year! Great wildlife, scenery, camping, lakes, dining. Spend a day there!
Another great day trip to go see buffalo and other wildlife, along with great mountains and hikes galore.
Experience the rugged beauty of the Wild West where buffalo still thunder across the earth and graze the open plains—especially during the park’s annual Buffalo Roundup. Each fall, the ground rumbles as crews saddle up to drive in the herd of 1,300. Visit Sept. 25, 2020, to witness the spectacle, or…
There are so many awesome areas in Custer State park. Drive the wildlife loop to see the free roaming buffalo, prairie dogs, antelope, and wild donkeys. Or drive up to Sylvan lake and take an adventure on the Sunday Gulch trail (moderate to hard level due to the bouldering you will need to do).
Custer State Park is a must visit if you like natural beauty, wildlife, and recreation. You could easily spend a couple days here.
Wild buffalo and other animals roam in the security of the park. Please do not approach animals they are wild.
Custer State Park is South Dakota's first and largest. The park offers incredible wildlife viewing, hiking, climbing, mountain biking, swimming and more. Incredible beauty abounds but don't miss taking the game loop drive and stopping into the game lodge after.

“A gorgeous little visitor center that talks about the mining history as well as the high-tech physics experiments that are now being conducted almost a mile underground. Great for kids and nerdy adults like me!”

“Located in a scenic ponderosa pine forest, this 1,279-acre park is a peaceful retreat for hiking, bird-watching and viewing colorful wildflowers. However, its most spectacular sight lies deep beneath the surface. Discover Jewel Cave, the third-longest cave in the world, which boasts more than 180 miles of mapped passageways as well as illuminated caverns, glittering dogtooth spar crystals, textured “cave popcorn” and ceilings dripping with stalactites. From the 20-minute Discovery Talk to the Historic Lantern Tour to the Wild Caving excursion characterized by rope-assists and belly-crawls, there’s an experience for every visitor at Jewel Cave. The monument’s most popular adventure is the Scenic Cave Tour. This experience allows visitors to view the cave’s most astounding formations. As a result, the tour tends to sell out in summer and holiday periods, so reserve in advance at BlackHillsVacations.com. Nearby Towns: Custer (12.5 miles)”
