“Fortress of Saint Lawrence is an historical monument and political symbol of the Autonomous Region of Madeira built in the beginning of the 16th century in order to protect the people of Funchal. It also hosts the Madeira Military Museum.”

“São João Baptista Fortress is situated 111.5 metres above sea level, this fortress, which was completed in the second half of the 17th century,served as a warehouse for the city’s gunpowder supply (supplying all of the fortresses and towers on the island). In the 17th century, some trade apprenticeship workshops were established within the fortress that continued to operate until the 19th century. Initially called São João Fortress, the name was changed to São Filipe and then to São Miguel. It was later restored to its original name. In the mid-20th century, the Portuguese Navy was given control over the fortress, where they installed their Command Centre”

“ The Museum “A Cidade do Açúcar” (The City of Sugar), was established by the City Hall of Funchal and opened to the public on October 12th 1996. It is dedicated to the island’s sugar industry between the fifteenth and nineteenth centuries, in a period known as the "white gold cycle”, one of the greatest and most notorious times of the history and culture of Madeira Island.”
