As newcomers to the region, we were only vaguely aware of the farming area called the Palouse, which begins about 15 miles south of Spokane and sprawls for 2 million acres across southeastern Washington and north central Idaho. The farms in the area are major producers of lentils and wheat. All this makes it sound like typical farm country (nice, but ho-hum), but the unique topography of the Palouse makes it truly spectacular and unlike any other place in the world. The hills were formed over tens of thousands of years from wind-blown dust and silt, called "loess.” They look like giant sand dunes because they were formed in much the same way; in spring and summer, the vibrant green is almost psychedelic, and in fall after harvest, the patchwork of textures and shades of golden brown are mesmerizing. Steptoe Butte rises up from the Palouse about 3,600 feet, giving you a panoramic view for 200 miles (along with a rest room, some benches, and when the wind is right, colorful hang gliders looking like exotic birds). The hour-long drive takes you through mighty pretty country, which is why we’re developing a picnic experience for guests; if you are interested, let us know!

Although it's a cruise, the views at the top are spectacular! Take in a 360 degree view of the surrounding Palouse region and distant mountains. You can see all the way to Canada and Montana from here! Signs at the top explain the views in all directions.
