Grotto Falls is accessible via a 2.6 mile round trip hike from the Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail. It is the only water fall in the park that you can walk behind.

Trillium Gap Trail leads to Grotto Falls and meanders through an old-growth hemlock forest and actually runs behind the 25 foot high waterfall. The cool, moist environment near the falls is ideal for salamanders and summer hikers. The hike is 3 miles roundtrip and considered moderate in difficulty.

The Grotto Falls in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park is a unique 25-foot waterfall that you can actually walk behind. This waterfall is accessed by the Trillium Gap Trail to Grotto Falls which is a moderate 2.6 mile hike round-trip and mostly shaded with tree cover the entire way making it perfect for a warm sunny day. The National Park Service has noted that black bears are active in this area, so it is important to know what you would do if you encountered a black bear.

If you want to get the waterfall experience with less of the rough and rocky terrain, this is a great kid-friendly alternative. Only 2.6 miles, its shaded by a hemlock canopy which makes this a great choice for the leisurely hiker. Plus, its the only waterfall in the park you can walk behind!
