The Aratiatia dam forms part of the Aratiatia Power Station (enabling water to be diverted through the power station). The dam gates are opened daily at 10am, 12pm, 2pm and 4pm (in summer) releasing 65,000l of water per second. It's an interesting and impressive site. And there's also a walkway above the old river bed/rapids with a number of viewpoints. Note, the river bed/rapids are dangerous given the quickly changing water levels. Access is not permitted.

Plan your drive to arrive at 12pm 2pm or 4pm when the water is released over the floodgates and watch the river flood. Not safe for swimming, as the water is treacherous when released.

This is the first of 9 dams on the Waikato River. It opens at 10am, 12 pm, 2 pm and 4 pm during the summer months. Be there before that time to ensure you see the transformation that happens very quickly. This is a must see.

The Aratiatia Dam on the Waikato River opens each day at 10am, 12 Noon, 2pm, (and 4pm during daylight saving). A marvellous sight seeing the canyon fill up with water so that the rapids flow over the huge rocks.

Worth the 20 minute trip to see the dam opening several times a day.
