the historic centre of Martina Franca is a Baroque delight. A labyrinth of winding streets will lead you through this once very important city centre. You will be thrilled at the beautiful baroque facades of the many churches and porticos of rich merchants.

Martina Franca, although medieval in origin, is mainly now a Baroque beauty, rebuilt after the earthquake of 1743. Enter via Piazza XX Septembre & the beautiful gateway, Porto Santo Stefano, and take in the baroque buildings in each of the piazzas on the way to the stunning Basilica di San Martino. This overlooks the Piazza Plebiscito with an oval arcade- a good place to sit and have a caffè or gelato. The quality of the architecture in this part of town is extraordinary ... not just the imposing facade of neighbouring San Martino, but many intricately carved examples of the stone mason's art that can be found over nearby doorways. This is definitely a town to explore slowly by foot!
