Located at the lobby of the W Hotel of Mexico City, the Living Room Bar is the place to go for a sophisticated evening. The bar is named Living Room Bar because it comes equipped with comfortable seating and games. But on top of that, this bar offers a romantic view of Campos Eliseos, the Mexican equivalent of the Champs-Élyseés in Paris, as well as delicious food and an exciting and varied drinks list, including a delightful selection of cocktails, perfect for a quiet evening out.

At their on-site bar, the St. Regis has imported its signature cocktail from New York, the Bloody Mary, and given it a local mezcal twist. At this cozy and elegant space, dotted with cushy dark green couches, the vibe is buttoned up and super civilized—a welcome break from the somewhat rowdier Roma and Polanco bar scene. Rather than a DJ, the music tends to come from a live piano in the corner, or the occasional jazz quartet. They also serve a lot of serious whiskeys.

Food Scene

Street food purists say the only reason to venture into Polanco at all is to taste the cochinita pibil at this classic spot. Unlike everything else in the area, it's decidedly no-frills and stands out as a vestige from another era. The Yucatán-style roasted and braised pork is meltingly tender and needs only a topping of pickled onions to offset its richness.

A who’s who of locals and foreigners mingle at this little Juarez cafe as cocktails and bottles of natural wine fill their tables. Chef-owner Scarlett Lindeman is behind the short but very precise menu, with favorites like the breakfast sandwiches and house-made seasonal pies. Cicatriz’s Yoko, a signature take on the Aperol spritz, is why you’ll now find different versions all over Mexico City.

Saturday brunch at Masala y Maíz is a great way to kick off the weekend. The team combines ingredients from nearby organic farms for an inventive menu that draws on both Mexican and Indian cuisines. Chefs Norma Listman and Saqib Keval opted to set up their project in San Miguel Chapultepec, a refreshing choice outside the usual Roma and Condesa food circuits.

If jewelry is more up your street then TANE, a jeweler with a few branches in Polanco alone, would make a great shout. Again, this is situated on Avenida Presidente Masaryk, which basically means it will be top quality but definitely not cheap. Having said that, the jewelry at TANE is classy, subtle and oozes elegance.

Sightseeing

This is an impressive castle at the top of the only hill in Bosque de Chapultepec. The location was once a sacred place for Aztecs. After construction of the castle was completed, the building served several purposes. It was used as a military school in 1841, and in the 19th century Maximiliano of Habsburg and Princess Carlota of Belgium lived here for some years during some political turmoil. This museum hosts exhibitions about the conquering of Tenochtitlan, the independence from Spain, and the Mexican Revolution. You also can see magnificent murals made by some of the major muralists in Mexico.

In the heart of Mexico City, only a few meters from the historical center known as the Zócalo, is the Museo del Templo Mayor. This site provides a surreal experience, as amid modern buildings lie monumental vestiges of the ancient city known as Tenochtitlan. The Aztecs had built the legendary city by making artificial islands known as chinampas on Texcoco Lake. Like in other cultures, Aztecs used to build several layers of construction above the first foundations. Only the first remains and it retains some of the original colors painted in it. If the Spaniards had not destroyed it, it would be approximately the same height as the Roman Coliseum. Besides the ruins, there is a museum in which you can see original objects found in the temple.

Parks & Nature

Is one of the City’s most pristine and manicured parks. Perhaps the poshest part of Polanco, it’s surprisingly accessible, and frankly, quite a big park. The first park designed just for the neighborhood, it’s surrounded by homes and apartment buildings, but lends a great deal to the area’s sense of openness. It was opened in 1938 by President Lazaro Cardenas. At the time it was called both Parque de Polanco, and Parque del Palomar for its aviary. The great clock tower lends its image to the Metro Polanco station just a few blocks away. The park also hosts the Angela Peralta open-air theater, and a few small aviaries. It’s best known for the two reflection pools in the center of the park. These are frequently used for model ship races and flotillas. Some can even be rented. The playground is easily the biggest in the area. The park is named for Abraham Lincoln who very famously opposed the US Invasion of Mexico between 1846 and 1848. Statues of both Abraham Lincoln and Martin Luther King stand in the park. The Lincoln statue was the gift of President Lyndon Johnson in 1966. The park’s name was changed to Parque Lincoln shortly thereafter.

Built on about 30-hectares in the heart of Santa Fe, Parque La Mexicana is a welcome natural refuge in an area bristling with modernity. With time and patience, the area was slowly converted for use as a private park. The park was designed by architects Mario Schjetnan and Víctor Márquez. The concept is based on that of an urban park, Martin Luther King Park, in Clichy-Batignolles in Paris. The project was carried out in two stages. The first included building a running track, bike lanes, artificial lakes, and a skate park. More than 3,000 trees were planted, and more than 180,000 square meters of lawns and gardens installed. Another 60,000 square meters is dedicated to the region’s indigenous species. The on-site lakes are filled with rainwater which is also used to irrigate the rest of the park and artificial lighting is powered entirely through solar panels. The next stage of development for the park is to include a few coffee shops, restaurants, and pet stores to make the entire place a bit more diverse and homely. Football and basketball facilities are also planned for some currently underused areas. The planners who’ve participated in the Parque La Mexicana initiative fully intend to add surplus value to the broader Santa Fe community. As a green space and outdoor recreation center, there’s no question they’ve succeeded.
