We love walking along the lakefront on a sunny morning to The Cove Cafe (10 minutes from house). The views of the lake are absolutely stunning. The food is yummy and the coffee delicious.

For the savvy connoisseur, the Bistro Lago offers a beautiful menu and view of stunning Lake Taupo. It is a cheap taxi ride from Pipi Villa if you wish to have drinks as well.

If you are after a special night out while you are staying, Huka Lodge is stunning. Prepare to be treated like royalty in one of the most spectacular locations in New Zealand. The cuisine is something special indeed!

Finding a new location for a hearty breakfast in Taupo is always an enjoyable challenge. A hard job, but if someone’s got to do it… my partner and I will do it! The Spoon & Paddle Café is located on the corner of Heuheu and Titiraupenga Streets in central Taupo, approximately 5 minutes walk from the famous Hole in One Golf lakefront attraction.
The menu is comprehensive including Gluten and Dairy Free options. I went for my standard Scrambled Eggs & Bacon on Sourdough (NZ$15), while Karen went for the Cape Seed Toast, Smashed Avocado & Poached Egg (NZ$16.50). To top the meal off we both had a Flat White coffee.
The staff were incredibly friendly and our meals delicious.

Being located away from the tourist hub of restaurants on the waterfront, Pauly’s seems to be a secret well-kept by the Taupo locals. The Diner is quite small, however it makes up for its size with a decent selection of burgers and very friendly staff.
I had the “Dirty Bird” Burger ($12) – Buttermilked Southern Fried Chicken, Honeybutter & Coleslaw. Being an American style burger, i had prepared my taste buds for a little heat, but this was not to be the case. Not that this detracted from the taste. This was a really yummy burger, the chicken was delicious!

Everything Else
Possibly the most photographed part of the Taupo fishery if not of New Zealand is the "picket fence" at the mouth of the Waitahanui River where it enters the lake. A Fly Fisherman's paradise.

Located a short 5 minutes away from our villa, the 2 Mile Bay Sailing Club is a great place to go to hire kayaks, paddle boards, yachts and even a trailer sailor. They also serve fantastic coffee, and have a great bar with live music. A real gem in Taupo and so close!

The Pub n Grub is great if you want a yummy no-frills pub meal and a drink right by the lake. It is an excellent spot to watch the rugby.

Perfect spot for a pint with the locals. Dress code = casual only. They also do a pretty good big breakfast.

Parks & Nature
I would rate Wharewaka Pt as one of the best swimming spots in this part of Taupo. Acacia Bay across the bay is also obviously good but near us Wharewaka is excellent. Plenty of parking space, a lovely walk from 2 Mile Bay and beautiful clear and deep water.
