Food Scene
Our favourite restaurant, Michelin rated, and previously owned by TV Chef Jean Christophe Novelli. Try the plat du jour at lunchtime Mon-Fri for a less costly treat. Set in gorgeous grounds, and less than 10 minutes away by car

If the locals eat there, it is a good place to go. This is a popular place for the lunchtime plat du jour meals, at 12.50 euros for 4 courses. We plan to go back there again after just discovering this restaurant. There is a children's playpark just across the road, and views over the forest of Saint-Sever in the distance.

Sightseeing
It's the third most visited tourist attraction in France. Whether you actually go to the Mont, or just view it from a distance, it is beautiful. During the summer months you can have an evening meal actually on the Mont-Saint-Michel as it is open until 11pm. Top Tip: Arrive early or late, or expect to queue.

The historic area, high up in the town overlooking the port, has cobbled streets, galleries, cafes etc. Also check out the shopping in the lower part of the town.

Bayeux is an interesting place to visit for a day. The Tapestry (with audio tour – good for young and old), the Cathedral, the streets packed with shops and cafes – it doesn't disappoint.

Parks & Nature
The beautiful Forest of Saint-Sever is on our doorstep. Go to the "Etang du Vieux Chateau" lake and picnic area, park your car and take one of the many walking routes through the forest. There are marked trails throughout. Visit "L'etape en Foret" for a "go-ape" type activity centre with restarant, just a short distance from the lake.

A peaceful lake, with a dam at one end. You can hire pedalos in the summer, or take a 6km walk or bike ride around the lake on the good level footpath. Plenty of picnic tables and benches to stop off at, it's in a beautiful spot surrounded by rolling hills. Visit the Vire Golf Club (open to the public and with pleasant staff) on the banks of the lake for a drink or a snack. It has a fabulous view.

Great for sand dunes and solitude. And a view of the Mont-Saint-Michel. There is a café and toilets open in the summer.

This bell foundry town is 20 minutes from La Boesle, and a lovely place for a coffee after doing the historic walking tour of the town and a visit to the foundry (free map available at the tourist information centre). The market on a Wednesday is always lively, and there are some interesting shops selling copper and metal items around the town. There are several restaurants here too.

Granite Museum – with free entrance; it's on the doorstep so why not find out about the granite in the area.

We use Vire for our weekly shopping – there are several large supermarkets (Leclerc, Carrefour, Intermarche, Lidl, Aldi), and there is a self-service laundry at the large Carrefour supermarket – so you can wash your clothes, do your shopping and return to collect your clean laundry. Vire town centre was bombed heavily in the second world war, but still have a couple of historic sites – the old castle keep on the hill, and the Porte de Vire, right in the centre. Try the Central bar for a coffee, it’s a place we look to people-watch. Vire's food speciality is Andouille (sausage) – and there are various shops in the town centre that sell this delicacy. The foody market on a Friday is a big one.

In our opinion, Gathemo's boulangerie is the best in the area, and is only a short drive away.

Drinks & Nightlife
The Normandy bar in St Pois is a lively spot on a Wednesday and Saturday, when there is a mix of Brits and French at this bar. This is one of the few late opening bars in the area. It's basic, but friendly.
Top tip: Try the plat du jour, either in the day or evening. At around 12 euros for 4 courses including wine and coffee it won't break the bank!
