Yellowstone National Park is at the center of the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem, in the Northern Rockies of the United States. largely in the northwest corner of Wyoming and extending into Montana and Idaho. It was established by the U.S. Congress and signed into law by President Ulysses S. Grant on March 1, 1872. Yellowstone was the first national park in the U.S. and is also widely held to be the first national park in the world. The park is known for its wildlife and its many geothermal features, especially Old Faithful geyser, one of its most popular. While it represents many types of biomes, the subalpine forest is the most abundant. It is part of the South Central Rockies forests ecoregion.

Located about 20 minutes west of 4 Corners. Very scenic canyon, with the Madison River flowing through it. Excellent scenery and flyfishing. Also a great start to put in while floating the Madison River, at Warm Springs. The land bordering the east side of Beartrap Canyon, and the Lee Metcalf Wilderness, is Ted Turner's Flying D Ranch, which can be accessed from the east side, up Spanish Creek Rd, off of Gallatin Canyon Rd.

Beautiful alpine lake deep in the Gallatin Canyon, in the Madison Range. 4.5 miles, moderate hike. This trail can also be done in the winter with snowshoes and/or boot spikes. The lake's southeast flank is a massive jumble of rocks, which collapsed off of northwestern Table Mountain. This lake has great fishing, and camping as well.

This is the most visit recreational area in the State of Montana, with millions of visitors each year. You will quickly see why when you take the drive to the Reservoir, and start hiking in the vast Gallatin National Forest. This Canyon is host to the Ice Climbing Festival, and Ice climbing championships. Hike along the main Hyalite Creek trail and visit 7 easily accessible waterfalls along its length. There are a total of 14 waterfalls we have found while accessing the backcountry in the canyon. Check out Palisade Falls, East Fork Divide Trail, East Shore Trail, Mt. Blackmore, and many more different hikes. Ask us for more specific advice on hiking! We love this place so much, we got married on the shores of Hyalite Reservoir in 2011! Things to do here include fishing, hiking, mountain climbing, mountain biking, rock climbing, skiing and more.

You just can't beat a hike up to Sacajawea Peak, the highest mountain in the Bridger Range. It is the broad triangular, left side peak to the northeast of town (the one on the right along the ridge is Naya Nuki). If you can stomach the drive up Fairy Lake road (bumpy 7.5 miles but accessible by 2 wd - take it slow!), you will be rewarded with a beautiful alpine lake called Fairy Lake (with great fishing). The hike is about 2.5 miles, and can be done by families with small children, but should be considered moderate, and should be avoided when windy or inclement weather is in the forecast. Amazing views of many central and southwest Montana mountain ranges.

Scenic mountain range with endless outdoor recreation just to the southwest of Bozeman. This is the mountain range on the west side of the Gallatin River as you are driving in the Gallatin Canyon (the Gallatin Range is on the east side). This area has 4 sections of designated wilderness (Lee Metcalf Wilderness), and offers opportunities which can be packed, or totally isolated. For example, hike Lava Lake, and you will have a great time people watching, but head into sections of the Hilgard Basin, and you may not see anyone for days! What can't you do here? Our family enjoys visiting one of the numerous alpine lakes, and having a picnic, fishing, while looking for mushrooms or huckleberries. In our younger days we would be busy climbing one of the many peaks in the range.

Just outside of Three Forks Montana. Good for families with children 5+ years old. Great hiking outside the cave, which is also good in winter, as it is warmer, and stays drier than the surrounding areas. This area also has great mountain biking. Scenic spot for picnics

Great spot near Downtown to take a break, let the kids get their jitters out, and sit by the creek. Lots of things close by such as the Library, and Peet's Hill. Playground, hockey rink, basketball courts, Bogert Pool, and bandstand with occasional live music, and connected to the city's hiking trails.

One of our favorite parks in Bozeman. Hike up to the top, or drive up and park at the top from the east side. Grab a bench and watch the sunset, or just take in the views of the Valley and surrounding mountain ranges. Nice views of Downtown Bozeman. Great spot to take dogs, as this is an off-leash city park.

This is probably one of the busiest trails in Montana, as a heads up. For good reason! Excellent southerly views of Bozeman, the Gallatin Valley, and surrounding mountain ranges. It can either be a quick 0.9 mile moderately difficult hike up the steep way. Or a 2.1 mile easy/moderate hike up the long way, gaining about 900 vertical feet form the parking lot. Parking is also available across the street at Drinking Horse Trail. Please pick up after your dog!

A great hike for families exploring the Big Sky Area. Just make a left onto Ousel Falls Rd. when you hit the Meadow Village, and it will be on your left about 1 mile down the road. Easy/moderate hike, with great canyon views, and scenic waterfalls along the way. Watch out for bears! Bring spray.

This giant rock, overlooking the Gallatin River in Gallatin Canyon is a memorable trip for any visitor. There is a scene in the movie, A River Runs Through It, and Brad Pitt is fly fishing in the River with a huge monolith in the background. This is Storm Castle. It is a moderate 2.5 mile hike to the top, with about 900 foot elevation gain. Stunning views all around.

An iconic local waterfall. Accessible with a wheel chair or stroller. Paved until the falls, although the last 100' of pavement are a little sketchy. You can access this waterfall year round, except during spring from April 1st- May 15th, when Hyalite Road is closed for spring thaw. Very scenic, and a lot of opportunity to scramble up to the right of the waterfall, and climb over the top to explore the hanging valleys behind it.

Spectacular waterfalls right off of the Main Boulder Road, just south of Big Timber, Montana / I-90. There is handicap access to the bridge over looking the waterfalls, and a handicapped and stroller accessible, paved, trail to various lookout points on the west side of the bridge, and a fun, easy trail around the rim of the lower falls.

Within the boundaries of this scenic park and National Historic Landmark, the Jefferson, Madison, and Gallatin rivers merge to form the 2,300 mile Missouri River. Considering it an essential point in the geography of this western part of the continent, Meriwether Lewis wrote the country opens suddenly to extensive and beautiful plains and meadows which appear to be surrounded in every direction with distant and lofty mountains. The legendary Sacajawea was captured here as a child and eventually returned as a member of the Corps of Discovery. Another member of this expedition, John Colter, later made several trips to this area in search of furs and began his famous run nearby. Pioneers slowly settled the surrounding area and transformed it into profitable grazing and farming land. Missouri Headwaters State Park preserves much of the region's abundant wildlife, lush, vegetation, and scenic beauty that have attracted people for thousands of years.

You can tour Bozeman's trout fish hatchery right outside of town! Great for little kids to see where the little minnows come from! Call ahead for info, especially with Covid. There are 2 extremely popular trails which go up from the Hatchery. To the north is the College M Trail, and to the southeast is Drinking Horse. If you are driving around the Pioneer Scenic Byway just to the southwest of Butte, make sure to stop at Crystal Park. It is located south of Wise River, and north of Elkhorn Hot Springs. This can be an excellent activity to get everyone out of the car to stretch their legs, and dig for some crystals. They are pretty abundant, and found all over the place. There are hundreds of pits to start digging in, and you can usually just find them scattered on the soil after a heavy rainfall. Good luck!

When you imagine the type of food you can find at Bozeman restaurants, Korean probably doesn’t come to mind … or at least not initially. But rest assured that Whistle Pig Korean, serving up classic Korean food and Korean rice bowls is some of the best food you can find in Bozeman. Tucked away off of Wilson Avenue, Whistle Pig is a great spot for something unique and flavorful. But rest assured that Whistle Pig Korean, serving up classic Korean food and Korean rice bowls is some of the best food you can find in Bozeman. Tucked away off of Wilson Avenue, Whistle Pig is a great spot for something unique and flavorful. For your first visit, we highly recommend the bibimap- your choice of meat (go with the bulgogi beef) with seasoned fresh vegetables, a fried over easy egg, fermented chili paste, served over a bed of rice.

Neighborhoods

Bozeman is a place, which people fall in love with when they visit. It has a unique vibe, with Montana State University, located just west of Willson Ave and south Main St, holding a prominent spot within our community's culture and economy. We still have the old Montana feel in areas close to town, and agriculture makes up 1/3 of the Gallatin Valley's economy. The Downtown area, and surrounding neighborhoods are very livable, with clean streets, some of the best schools in our great State, and with thriving shops. There is always something for tourists and locals to find. Let us know if you have any questions before your visit, and make sure to peruse the guidebooks we leave in each of our units.

Sightseeing

This is a community, formerly known as Salesburg in the olden days. It is on the way to Big Sky from Bozeman on highway 191. This town used to be connected by a railway to Bozeman, called the Gallagator, which is now a trail in Downtown Bozeman. This area is growing very fast, and is a very desirable place to live and visit. Fishing, nearby hiking, and at the entrance of Gallatin Canyon make it all the place to be in Gallatin County.

Montana is chock full of historic ghost town. Our State's nickname is the "Treasure State", and these towns sprung up in the mid 19th century, seemingly overnight, and then vanished just as quick, as fortunes were made. Some of our favorites include Bannack, Elkhorn, Independence, Coolidge and Dewey, and Castle Town. Make sure to observe "private property" signs when visiting any of these locations.
