A little bit on the pricey side, but my favorite restaurant in Kailua. The lemon risotto is a MUST. Everything is super fresh and local.

Another go to for fresh fresh fresh! Order at the counter and get your food to go, plate lunch style, or sit and be served while admiring the ever-changing local art that adorns the walls. My favorites here are the garlic ahi plate, garlic chicken plat, and you MUST try the sweet potato haupia pie. The serve brunch on Sundays!

Stop here on your way to the beach to stock up on drinks and food - poke to be precise! They best poke bowls in Kailua, and super duper FRESH. This small market has the friendliest owner and the best local meats and vegetables. If you are not here for a poke bowl - you can purchase meat/veggies to take home and grill yourself, or if you are patient, the staff will cook it up for you there.

The most lovely place in Kailua to sit outside on the lanai and enjoy pupus. You MUST try the calamari - it is served steak style to perfection and is doused in a lemon, butter, caper sauce. You will not be disappointed. The small spot has not changed a bit since it first opened. If you want to enjoy dinner, be patient because they do not take reservations and the wait to sit inside can get to be long. It is well worth it for amazing seafood, steak, burgers, salads, drinks, etc. Men, you must have a sleeved shirt (no tank tops) if you wish to sit inside and no beachwear is accepted for men or women.

Parks & Nature

Lanikai has become overpopulated and very touristy over the past several years, but it is still one of the most beautiful beaches on the island. If the waves are too big to relax in the water at Kailua Beach, you can be sure that Lanikai will be flat and lovely as ever. Bring your floaties and inner-tubes and admire the turquoise water and the view of the Mokulea Islands. Just be sure you abide by the parking signs - the police will not hesitate to give you a ticket if you are parked even a millimeter over the bike lane.

A hike that is suitable for beginners and offers the best view of Kailua. Depending on your experience, this will take you anywhere from 20 minutes to 45 minutes to get up... and it is always faster going down. Bring water for those super sunny days, but it is best to go early in the morning and enjoy the hike when it is not too crowded with tourists. Obama loves to do this when he is in town and it has created quite the influx of visitors to the hike.

A beautiful hike suitable for beginner or advance hikers. Be patient and make it all the way to the bottom of the trail where a waterfall awaits you. Dip in your toes or swim across and join the other folks who are jumping in from the adjacent cliff. Make sure to wear bug spray because the mosquitos also love this spot! I would avoid this all-together if it has been raining recently - it because very muddy and hard to walk, making it not enjoyable.

Another great place for poke bowls. Head to the fish counter and ask for a sample. The California roll poke and the oyster sauce poke are my favorites - even better when you get a poke bowl with both!
