Food Scene

you COULD stay in Mid-city for a couple weeks and never hit all the amazing places to eat just in our neighborhood. However, I have included other favorites around the city too!
Family owned, some of the best Gelato in town! Also have a nice assortment of fresh baked Italian pastries and cakes as well as on the spot homemade cannelloni. Often has a line day and night but they move pretty quickly.

OKAY-so not technically in MidCity just on the edge and some of the freshest sushi in town and they deliver! They are ALWAYS BUSY which means the fish has to be fresh, it never has long to sit! They have a take out window- call ahead. Very reasonably priced.

Just moved to this location, a locally owned MidCity breakfast institution. Their home fries are lovely and Migas delightful. Broad menu without being overwhelming, great bar with very solid Mimosa variations and straightup Blood Mary's. Outside waiting area with access to the bar is comfortable to hang out before you table is ready. Packed on the weekends, no reservations, but if you are not in a rush, well worth it. Less busy weekdays.

small! Mediterranean inspired eatery off Esplanade. VERY FRESH ingredients, lovely flavors, not ALL of them work ALL the time, but have never had a meal there most of which was delicious. Seats 20 -25 maybe... and lunch is crazy busy. But they also do takeout so grabbing something and taking across the street to Fortier park or up Esplanade to City Park is also an option

Great BBQ in Midcity, easy walk from our home, meats smoked right on site, friendly: "....a mid-priced restaurant with a good beer selection and solid, oak-smoked meat".

Lola's is a small, intimate Spanish restaurant, with a NOLA influence. Great Paella,( seafood, meat and veggie) and a lovely grilled salmon when they have it. Midpriced, they have a small selection of wine/sangria and beer but BYOB with corkage fee is also available with two grocery stores on the block that sell alcohol.

From their site: "Herbsaint works closely with local farmers and fishermen, offering contemporary, seasonal French-Southern cuisine with elements of rustic Italian cooking. An eclectic wine list and a knowledgeable staff make for perfect pairings". I'd say that and a 2017 James Beard award winning Best Chef South make for a wonderful downtown, easily accessible ( by trolley and otherwise) delightful dining experience. If the crab bisque is on the menu on that day, GET IT!

Out near the lake, Susan Spicer's Mondo has a menu can change daily, depending on what she can get fresh ( and local) at the moment. Lunch/dinner are served, very creative interpretations from her ceviche, to her fried halloumi with roast vegetables to her Slow Roasted Pork Shoulder with Black Beans, Plantains and Tomatillo Salsa, and that is just one of many suggestions that cross the globe in style and flavor. Kids meals also available as are the Wood Fired Pizzas

Very creative New Orleans cuisine, exceptional bar, great NOLA setting in what was a 2 story corner store back in the day ( had been an AUTO PARTS store JUST before COQUETTE took it over), consistently excellent food. Cannot go wrong. Not inexpensive, but not crazy either

CLASSIC old school, NOLA - "Modern New Orleans cooking meets our Haute Creole" . Pricey, but good, heavy on the butter and sauces, "dirt to plate within 100 miles" policy means that we strive for 90% of our ingredients to come from within 100 miles of our back door". The kind of place where people have had their own table for years....$0.25 martinis at lunch, with gumbo or Turtle soup is quite a meal.

Old New Orleans restaurant "Family-friendly spot since 1913, best known for BBQ shrimp but also serves Louisiana-Italian dishes." The BBQ shrimp is amazing, but VERY HEAVY and can work the arteries big time, but oh so tasty. Mid priced

Pho is only as good as its broth and I think. Pho Tau Bay has some of the best broth in the city. Recently reopened in the city after a long hiatus post Katrina, they have an extensive selection of Pho and other Vietnamese food items. Not expensive, quick to eat, friendly staff, nice enviroment, funky location near the new medical center district.

This Tex-Mex diner had a few locations in town including one 1 block from our home. They do have some very popular tables outside that can be hard to get in pleasant weather. Their burritos are huge both in the carne and the sans carne versions. I am particularly fond of the grilled fish tacos with mango salsa. Can be pretty busy around dinner time and beyond and during festival season, the wait can be significant. But the bar is very happy to ease your wait time with an excellent house margarita as well as a range of top shelf Tequilas.

"coastal Spanish cuisine, highlighting local produce and Gulf seafood in a casual, communal-dining setting." is how they describe themselves. We would concur. Amazing flavors, very attentive staff, challenging to book, but worth it if you can get in. Moderately priced, only real annoyance was lighting, a challenge to see menus and companions. But worth it regardless.

Lovely neighborhood restaurant in an old converted church! Bar runs near the length of the long wall, well stocked, very knowledgeable mixologist ( knew a LOT about Gin, not so common in our experience), comfortable spacious setting, very flavorful food. Walkable from the house! Could EASILY make a meal on small plates like the carrot ginger bisque and lemon truffle risotto, their large plates are exceptional too, especially the seared scallops.

Drinks & Nightlife

nice, intimate setting to have a beer or other alcoholic (or non) beverage and watch/listen to great music. smallish stage area so you feel you are with the musicians. Often smaller shows (1-5 person bands) with an incredible range of genres presented. Right on Trolley line and easy walk from the house.

nice, local, comfortable atmosphere, with good craft cocktails. sometimes have art shows in room upstairs. Food has been inconsistent recently, depends on who is running the kitchen at the time I guess.

NOTE: CURRENTLY UNDER CONSTRUCTION. OPEN BUT A BIT CHAOTIC AT TIMES. STILL-close enough to walk to, lovely to walk around, free outdoor sculpture garden. The Monkey Hands are particularly interesting. Nice place to picnic or go read a book too.
