Sometimes spelled "Sliabh" (pronounced "schleeve"), this mountain range is our pride and joy. To quote from their website (which puts it so well), they rise: "from the central plains of Ireland, forming a natural link between the counties of Laois & of Offaly. The area is picturesque, peaceful, gloriously multi-coloured & one of the least explored in Ireland. Dotted around the mountains are quaint little villages, & to visit one is like stepping back in time to an era when life moved at a slower pace. These are the places where people will take the time to talk to you, will listen to your stories and enjoy telling you theirs."

Moloney's Gaelic Bar is a century-old fixture! Established in 1916 (a very auspicious year in Irish Republican history), it remains under the ownership of the same family all this time. That speaks volumes and is an achievement in itself.

Sightseeing

Because we can't boast history as one of our talents, we shall quote discoverireland.ie here!! "The Vikings pillaged the settlement in 842. Later in the 12th century, the Normans arrived in Ireland. It was part of the dowry of Aoife, the daughter of Diarmuid Mac Murrough, King of Leinster, when she was given in marriage to the Norman conqueror Strongbow in 1170. When Isabel, the daughter of Strongbow and Aoife, wed William Marshal, Earl of Pembroke, Dunamase was given as part of her marriage's wedding gift. From 1325 until 1609, the castle belonged to the O’Moore family of Laois." See discoverireland.ie for more.

Arts & Culture

It's a sad & sobering place to visit but reflects a dark part of our history as a people. Well worth a visit. We will say no more.

Located just a few metres away from Pearse Mews, Mountmellick Museum provides a great snapshot of our history as a town. Founded by the Quakers, Mountmellick has a very rich history in textiles, particularly Mountmellick Embroidery (a.k.a. Mountmellick Work). A visit to the Museum is an interesting way to spend some time.

Shopping

You cannot come to Laois and not visit the Store Yard. This place is unique. Browse the stunning display of antiques of the highest quality, taxidermy, textiles, statues, kitchenalia, jewellery, china....... you name it! It's there. We are gushing to explain it but it really needs a visit in person. There is even a vintage clothes boutique in the middle of it all. Then, to top it all off, when you get hungry & thirsty from the drooling, pop into Tynans at The Store Yard. It's right there in the shop. Go. Just, go.
