Shopping

Super U, open daily except Sunday afternoons. There are also many Casino convenience stores across Chamonix that are open until 8 pm even Sundays. We prefer and would recommend to shop in Super U as prices are much cheaper. It is bigger therefore you have more choices especially for meat. The fruits and vegetables are generally fresher. To be honest, we only shop in Casinos when we don't have the choice like on a Sunday afternoon when we suddenly realise we are missing an ingredient for cooking! Beware though, the queues tend to be long in the Casinos on Sunday evenings as the Super U is closed! In spite of this, we have to say we are glad the Casinos are there to tide us over on Sundays.

Food Scene

Cap Horn. We love the sushi and especially the house sauce that they serve with it. They have daily specials for lunch that tend to focus on fish and they have a variety of seafood dishes to choose from if you feel like giving yourself a treat on oysters or a whole seafood platter (hence the name Cap Horn). However, this is not a fish only restaurant. They have steak and fries, beautifully cooked rack of lamb and delicious duck breast served with a honey sauce and rice. Service is modern French style. Chalet restaurant setting. Be sure to think of booking a table beforehand as they get very busy especially during high peak season.

La Calèche. We think no stay in Chamonix is complete without going to this restaurant. It is almost like a tourist destination on its own! If you're looking for local cuisine in a typical local setting then this is as local and as typical as it gets. Every inch of this traditional chalet restaurant is covered with objects related to mountain life (wooden sleds, cowbells, deer antlers, picture frames and photos documenting Chamonix's history and many more!), you might think you are inside a museum. We have even once caught ourselves playing "I spy!" Speaking of food, they serve a variety of local fare: raclette, fondue, tartiflette, melted Mont d'Or...they have good local wines too.

Le Matafan, located inside Hotel Mont Blanc which is a 5 star hotel owned by the Taittinger family (for those of you who are not in the know, it is the famous champagne brand). It is just down the street from the apartment. It's easy to get there, it's where you see the heated outdoor pool towards the left from the apartment balconies. So, just walk towards the pool and you're there! We like their daily lunch menus which is a good value for money. The food is delicate but generous at the same time. Overall, good food with pleasant ambience. We also like the complimentary bread they serve.

They have good bread and breakfast pastries (croissants, pain au chocolat etc). It recently underwent renovation at the beginning of the 2016-2017 season. They also do light lunches such as sandwiches and salads.

If you are looking for authentic Japanese food in town that also serves sushi, this is the place to go (there is a Japanese ramen place that opened in early 2016, but they don't do sushi). True, there are other places in town to eat sushi (like Cap Horn) but this place is worth going for for their speciality of typical hot meat and rice dishes of Japan. Hot sake is also on the drinks menu - very good for those blistering cold evenings. Really worth a try if you need a change from traditional alpine fare. Overall, good simple Japanese food in a casual and laid back setting. The restaurant is small and have limited seating, therefore we highly recommend that you book a table.
