The Cape Hatteras Lighthouse is a stunning sight and rich in history! And the drive down to Cape Hatteras is a beautiful sight itself, the island so narrow in many places that you are surrounded by water on both sides of the road! You can also stop at the beautiful Bodie Island Lighthouse on the way down and there are many places you can park along the road and enjoy a secluded beach all to yourself!

The Wright Brothers Multi-Use Path is a paved waterfront bike and walking trail. Gorgeous at sunset, the path ends at a sound beach/ lookout point at Kitty Hawk Bay. Check out the Facebook page dedicated to the path to see photos!

The museum, replica ship, guided trails, and live outdoor re-enactments tell the story of the Indians that once inhabited these barrier islands and the original English settlers that came here centuries ago and tells of what life was like for them.

Sightseeing
Ocracoke is a small, beautiful, historic island a ferry ride from Hatteras Island. There are wide open beaches and wild horses... but our favorite part is the quaint village with unique shops and restaurants, coffee shops & ice cream. A perfect village and small enough to rent some bikes and ride around for the afternoon to check it all out, including the beautiful light house. And so much history!
It is a bit of a trek from Kitty Hawk. The drive down to Hatteras Island is an hour and a half, but don’t be put off by that bc it is listed as one of America’s most scenic highways, a truly beautiful journey! From there, you drive your car onto the ferry (which is free!) and take the ride across to Ocracoke Island, which is about an hour (and also a gorgeous ride!)
If you have a whole day you can set aside for the trip, the we highly recommend making the journey down to Ocracoke Island!

Manteo’s waterfront downtown on Roanoke Island has so much to offer! Great shopping, restaurants, coffee and ice cream, a small historic operational movie theatre that shows one movie nightly at 8pm, an adorable lighthouse and LOTS of history (including the Lost Colony where the first English settlers came, Festival Park where you can tour Indian settlements, the Elizabethan Gardens, and so much more!) It’s one of our favorite places to walk around and shop or enjoy a date night! (About 25 minutes from here)
