Parks & Nature

Queenswood is a 20 minute walk from the front door. It has a great cafe with yummy English breakfasts. There is a lovely children's playground, gorgeous walks and glorious views. There is a car park there (no longer free sadly), but entrance to Queenswood is free. It has a sculpture Trail and reading seat. If you are very lucky, you may see deer.

There are three places we send people who want a good walk with fantastic views - one is the Malvern Hills. Park at British Camp and walk up to the top of the hill and if you had superman eyesight you would be able to see all the way to the Russian Urals!

Another favourite place for a good walk with incredible views is Hergest Ridge - it is part of Offa's Dyke and you can see for miles and miles around. There is hardly anyone up there. Once you are done, you can pop into Kington for a slice of cake and a cup of tea..

If you follow the Hope under Dinmore village road, under the railway lane, and keeping to the right, you will eventually (3 miles) get to Westhope Common. Straight ahead you will see Hay Bluff. Walk to the right across the common to see all of North Herefordshire spread out before you. On the way back down, you will see the Malvern Hills. Its a 6 mile round hike and one we do regularly.

Food Scene

For a curry, we go to Jalalabad where the food is good and the service is cheerful and there is parking really close by. You can order a take away and for a fee they will deliver - we usually just go and collect it.

The best local restaurant is Peppercorns where they have big white plates and modern food - you do need to book though.

This is my absolutely top favourite place in Herefordshire to eat - its French, hidden away in the Golden Valley to the south of the county and is a secret gem. You will need to book as there are only a few tables.

I love this vegetarian cafe which has an interesting menu and always go there with visitors or when I am in Hereford at lunch time. Its tiny inside but on sunny days you can sit outside too.

The cheese factory at Monkland has a coffee shop attached to it and you can buy locally made cheeses as well as other local products there. They also have a shop in Leominster and another one in Hereford, both called The MouseTrap.

Wonderful food in an exceptionally quirky and fun setting. We love it at The Cider Barn and often go there when family come and stay.

Shopping

Ludlow is wonderful medieval town with lots of independent shops and cafes and a market that is on most days. Well worth a visit. Big foodie town too.

There are lots of independent shops in Hereford and a permanent market as well as occasional ones. All the usual high street shops are there too. Lots of places to eat and drink too.

Hay on Wye has over 20 bookshops as well as some great boutiques, cafes, pubs and restaurants. Its a brilliant place for a day out and somewhere we take many of our first time visitors to.

Sightseeing

A trip to the cathedral is a must as it houses one of Herefordshire's claims to fame - the Mappa Mundi along with a Chained Library. The cathedral also has some modern stained glass windows (just off the Lady Chapel) celebrating Thomas Treherne's poetry, which are just gorgeous. From there a wander down Church Street with its independent shops makes a brilliant morning or afternoon's entertainment.
