This chippie occupies a tiny site close to the High Street. It serves the best fish and chips. There is a small seating area but most people choose to take-out and enjoy the view over the sea.

Drinks & Nightlife

The Harbour Inn is the best place for sit down fish and chips. Get there early for a seat in the original part of the pub for the authentic Southwold fish and chip experience. The smoked haddock and chips with minted mushy peas is our all time favourite.

Sightseeing

Promenade to the harbour circular walk Our favourite walk encompasses the highlights of Southwold. The route is about 2-3 miles and has plenty of places for you to stop. Start on the Pier, making sure you visit the Tim Hunkin artwork, before walking right along the promenade. Admire the beach-huts or stop for a cup of tea. Then carry on until across the sand dunes until you reach the harbour. Walk along the harbour's edge with its working fishing boats until you reach the Harbour Inn pub (where we highly recommend the fish and chips). Then walk back to town either using the road immediately next the pub or the footpath which is a little further along the riverbank. This is the old rai

Walk to Covehithe Covehithe beach is beautiful and relatively isolated, just to the north of the town. The beach does become inaccessible from Southwold at certain times of the day so beware the tide!

Parks & Nature

In Anglo-Saxon times, Dunwich was the capital of East Anglia. Almost the entire former city now lies under the sea. You can walk along the beach, see a reconstruction of the city at the museum and have an excellent pub lunch at the Ship Inn. Those feeling active can cycle to Dunwich. This is a beautiful (mostly flat) 9 mile bike ride. Bike hire is available opposite the Blyth Hotel on Pier Avenue. Once you get there it is worth a trip up to the Heath (which is owned by the National Trust). In the height of summer the heathland is a patchwork of purple. Bug-hunting kits provide excellent entertainment for children.

Walberwick is an incredibly popular village, best accessed by the ferry, which is rowed across the harbour (2 minute boat trip or 8 mile car journey). The boat only operates during peak season but just beyond the Harbour Inn there is a footbridge, which can be used all year round. There is a beach, a smattering of shops and play equipment. We recommend cream tea at the Parish Lantern.

Orford is a great foodie destination including the famous Orford Smokehouse. Those who arrive early can take a boat trip to Orford Ness which was used a military base during WW2. It is a very strange and haunting place and excellent for wildlife spotting.

Everything Else

Great Yarmouth offers a few interesting attractions and miles of sandy beaches. The Time and Tide Museum is a fascinating museum on the Herring Industry (exceptionally well done and far better than it sounds which is suitable for all ages). The Circus is also a favourite with an extraordinary finale! Pleasurewood Hills, a small theme park, is between Southwold and Great Yarmouth.
