A must stop! We feature daily specials and our menu includes dishes that cater to everyone from vegetarians to the health-conscious. And if you’re simply craving a delectable meal in a cozy bistro setting, you’ll find we’re serving up the best in sandwiches, burgers, comfort food, steaks, pasta, and seafood! Click on the menu tab for our daily menu and a monthly calendar of specials, and see what’s in store for entertainment on our jazz calendar. The Bistro at the Bijou Restaurant is located in one the most historic buildings in downtown Knoxville. As the fourth oldest building in Knoxville, it originally was built as a private home for Thomas Humes who unfortunately died of a skin ailment before the construction was completed. His widow opened the house as a hotel and tavern. It was the center of social activity for the community and was known as the grandest hotel in the South. The lovely piece of artwork below has been a focal point in the Bijou Theatre building for as long as anyone can remember. Hanging above the bar at the Bistro, the lady has been affectionately nicknamed Ms. Lil. She was painted in the late 19th century by James Patten, an artist of indeterminate origin, but with excellent taste in women.

The life size bronze statue commemorates Lizzie Crozier French, Anne Dallas Dudley, and Elizabeth Avery Meriwether, Tennessee pioneering suffragists who fought for passage of the 19th amendment, giving women the right to vote in 1920. Tennessee was the deciding state for women's right to vote to pass in the United States. The story is touching: In the early 1900s, the women’s suffrage movement used yellow roses to show support for women’s right to vote while anti-suffragists donned red roses to show their opposition to the movement. Most notoriously, the member of the Tennessee House of Representatives who cast the deciding vote in favor of women’s suffrage wore a red rose to show he did not support the movement. Then, after receiving a letter from his mother which urged him to “be a good boy” and vote in favor of women’s suffrage, Harry Burn cast the vote that changed history on August 18, 1920. Those supporting women's suffrage wore yellow roses. It was the war of the roses.

On February 17, 1943, the Russian composer Sergei Rachmaninoff -- the world's greatest living concert pianist at the time -- traveled all the way to Knoxville, played a concert in a gym, got on a train, and died. Knoxville felt so bad about it that the city accepted this statue from Russian sculptor Viktor Bokarev. It's the only statue of Rachmaninoff in the Western Hemisphere. The bronze statue clutches Chopin's Piano Sonata No. 2 in B flat Minor, featuring the famous "dum-dum-dumdum" Funeral March, which Rachmaninoff actually played in his final concert.

Alex Haley Square sits on the slopes of Morningside Park in East Knoxville. Amenities in the park include play structures, water fountain, green space and nearby Morningside Park and Morningside Greenway. However, park is best known for having the only 13 foot high bronze statue of author and Pulitzer prize winner Alex Haley. The statue is the focal point of the park. It was designed by sculptress Tina Allen and cast in bronze in New York City. The statue weighs 4,200 pounds and Allen’s depiction of Haley shows the author in a seated position, gesturing with an open hand as he reads from an open book in his lap. The statue was unveiled in the state’s Bicentennial celebration in June 1996. Alexander Murray Palmer Haley (August 11, 1921 – February 10, 1992)[1] was an American writer and the author of the 1976 book Roots: The Saga of an American Family. ABC adapted the book as a television miniseries of the same name and aired it in 1977 to a record-breaking audience of 130 million viewers. In the United States, the book and miniseries raised the public awareness of black American history and inspired a broad interest in genealogy and family history.[3] Haley's first book was The Autobiography of Malcolm X, published in 1965, a collaboration through numerous lengthy interviews with Malcolm X.[4][5][6] He was working on a second family history novel at his death. Haley had requested that David Stevens, a screenwriter, complete it; the book was published as Queen: The Story of an American Family. It was adapted as a miniseries, Alex Haley's Queen, broadcast in 1993.

The Charles Hall Museum exists to preserve regional and Appalachian history with an emphasis on the Greater Tellico Plains area. Born in Tellico Plains in 1924, Charles was a local historian since boyhood. Among the first white settlers in the area, his mother’s family settled in Tellico Plains by 1830. His father’s family settled in the area by 1908 and moved within the city limits in 1929. Charles served Tellico Plains as mayor for 31 years, as alderman-recorder for two years, as Justice of the Peace for six years, and as a county commissioner for six years. Showcased in two Museum buildings are his magnificent collections of historical memorabilia, artifacts, equipment, guns, antique telephones, coins and currency, photos, and so much more. Along with his collections, the Museum has acquired many public donations since opening in 2003. There are currently over 8000 artifacts and thousands of historical pictures and documents either displayed or archived for future reference. Tellico Plains is a special place with a rich heritage and limitless possibilities.

I have only had one guest come to the United States from Europe with this on her list to visit. Her parents met in a Polish concentration camp under Nazi regime. They promised if they survived, they would marry. They did and fled to England and had her. She made a point to visit this museum to say thanks. The Manhattan Project at Oak Ridge Several massive Manhattan Project facilities at Oak Ridge enriched uranium for use in Little Boy, the atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima, Japan on August 6, 1945. Today the story of the Manhattan Project at Oak Ridge includes historic sites, community centers and museums, and highly-secured nuclear research facilities operated by the US Department of Energy.

The Candoro Marble Company's office/showroom was designed in the Beaux-Arts style in 1921 by renowned architect Charles Barber. Samuel Yellin, one of the leaders of the American Arts and Crafts Movement, fabricated its exquisite ironwork. Albert Milani, a master sculptor from Carrara, Italy, carved the exterior ornamentation of the building. The company was once the leading producer of finished Tennessee pink marble. Candoro and its neighbor, Vestal Lumber Company, were the largest employers in the area. Candoro alone contracted 140 workers at its peak. However, as Tennessee marble popularity began to wane, the Candoro Marble Company fell onto hard times and shut its doors in 1982. The office/showroom remained primarily empty from the time the company closed. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1996. East Tennessee marble first attracted national attention in 1848 when two massive blocks from the region were shipped to Washington, D.C., for use in the Washington Monument. Other notable structures featuring East Tennessee marble include Grand Central Station in New York City, as well as the Lincoln Memorial and the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. Local sites showcasing the stone include Knoxville Museum of Art, East Tennessee History Center, the downtown Post Office, Fort Dickerson, Knoxville Botanical Gardens and Arboretum, and Ijams Nature Center. We only have one working quarry in East Tennessee out in Friendsville. I hosted a marble consultant for Italy on 3 different occasions for 6 weeks at a time. He was helping them with cuts and consulting work at their quarry. He wanted to stay in a place that felt like home. He planted herbs in my planters in the patio. He was an amazing guest.

This is a living history museum. The grounds are beautiful. I have rented their pavilion before for a birthday party. It is very reasonably priced. Sam Houston was a school master here at this log cabin. Sam Houston resided in Maryville, not far from my house years ago. The Virginia-born Houston was elected governor of Tennessee in 1827 after serving the state for four years in the U.S. House of Representatives. When the 35-year-old Houston’s arranged marriage to 19-year-old Eliza Allen fell apart after just 11 weeks, rumors of alcoholism and infidelity drove him to resign as governor in 1829. Three decades later, in 1859, Houston was elected governor of Texas. After running away from his family as a teenager, Houston lived for nearly three years with the Cherokee tribe in eastern Tennessee. Houston learned fluent Cherokee, embraced the tribe’s customs and was given the name “Black Raven.” After resigning in disgrace as Tennessee governor, the despondent Houston took refuge with the Cherokee in the Arkansas Territory. There, the tribe formally adopted him, and he married a Cherokee woman, Tiana Rogers, in a tribal ceremony. Houston served as the tribe’s spokesman and advocate with the federal government, and as a U.S. senator he pressed for Native American rights. He sometimes wore traditional Cherokee garb to government meetings in Washington, D.C.

Ramsey House was built in 1797 by Knoxville’s first builder, Thomas Hope, for Francis Alexander Ramsey. The home is constructed of Tennessee pink marble and blue limestone. It was known at that time as the finest home in Tennessee. The structure is significant for its original interior and exterior architectural features and its period decorative art collection. About the Family The Ramsey Family was one of the first families to settle the Knoxville area. They played vital roles in developing civic, educational and cultural institutions. Colonel Francis A. Ramsey was one of the founding trustees of Blount College, now the University of Tennessee. One of his sons, Dr. J.G.M. Ramsey authored an early history of the state, The Annals of Tennessee. Another son, William B.A. Ramsey, was the first elected mayor of Knoxville and the Secretary of State for Tennessee. Preserving History The historic house was bought in 1952 by the A.P.T.A., along with one acre of land. Today, the site consists of 101.5 acres; a historic house restored and furnished to the period of Francis A. Ramsey’s occupancy (1797-1820) and a Visitor Center located in a beautiful country setting. Historic Ramsey House is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

David Crockett is a genuine American hero. As a frontiersman, politician, and warrior, he won acclaim and a permanent place in the lore that forms the history of America. He may be best known as a martyr at the Alamo in Texas' battle for independence. David's early life was filled with hardship. As the fifth of six sons among John and Rebecca Crockett's nine children, David watched his father struggle with debt throughout his life. The family moved often, but they never strayed far from east Tennessee. After many failed attempts at business, David's father finally established a successful tavern where the Museum now stands.

My children and I enjoyed touring this Presidential site homestead, visitor center and National Historic Site. Greeneville is a short drive of an hour and 15 minutes from my house. But if seeing the homes of presidents is your thing ~ this place is not that far away. Andrew Johnson's complex presidency (1865-69) illustrates the Constitution at work following the Civil War. As the President and Congress disagreed on Reconstruction methods, the Constitution served as their guide on balance of powers, vetoes, and impeachment. In the end, it evolved as a living document with pivotal amendments on freedom, citizenship, and voting rights - topics still vital today.

I have hosted artisans before they were going to go immerse themselves in classes at the Arrowmont School of Arts & Crafts. I feel it is an important jewel to share with my guests. ARROWMONT IS A PLACE. In 2012, the historic campus of the Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts marked its 100th year as a place of education. The spirit of this heritage permeates the grounds, buildings and even the mountain air. The early years were about general education in a settlement school setting, but curriculum was soon added in mountain handicrafts to preserve skills and provide vehicles of livelihood for area residents. In 1945, the signature summer workshop program was launched during a period of revival in craft education and the school was opened to people from all over the United States who traveled to take art classes in the beautiful Great Smoky Mountains. Sixty-seven years later, that workshop program has evolved into the extensive summer and fall course offerings of more than 130 classes in contemporary art and crafts.

A trip over the Newfound Gap Road has often been compared to a drive from Georgia to Maine in terms of the variety of forest ecosystems one experiences. Starting from either Cherokee, North Carolina or Gatlinburg, Tennessee, travelers climb approximately 3,000 feet, ascending through cove hardwood, pine-oak, and northern hardwood forest to attain the evergreen spruce-fir forest at Newfound Gap (5,046'). This fragrant evergreen woodland is similar to the boreal forests of New England and eastern Canada. At nearly a mile high, Newfound Gap is significantly cooler than the surrounding lowlands and receives much more snow. Temperatures at the gap may be 10° F. or more cooler than in the lowlands and precipitation falling as rain in Gatlinburg or Cherokee may be snow at Newfound Gap. On average, 69 inches of snow falls at the gap. When there is snow on the ground, and the Newfound Gap Road has not been closed because of it, opportunities do exist for snow sports in the area. Many people use nearby Clingmans Dome Road (closed to vehicles December 1 - March 31) for walking and cross-country skiing. The road starts 0.1 mile south of Newfound Gap. Highlights: Rockefeller Memorial honors a $5 million donation from the Rockefeller Foundation to help complete land acquisitions to bring about the creation of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Scenic views from the large parking area. The Appalachian Trail (AT) crosses over Newfound Gap Road and straddles the state line between North Carolina and Tennessee for most of its length through the park. Visitors can enjoy a short stroll to stretch their legs or a multi-day backpacking excursion on the AT as it runs through the park. Just south of Newfound Gap, the seven-mile Clingmans Dome Road climbs to within 0.5 mile of Clingmans Dome the highest peak in the Smokies. From the large parking area at the end of the road, a 0.5-mile trail climbs steeply to an observation tower at the “top of old Smoky.” Clingmans Dome Road is closed December 1 - March 31.

The narrow, winding, Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail invites you to slow down and enjoy the forest and historic buildings of the area. The 5.5-mile-long, one-way, loop road is a favorite side trip for many people who frequently visit the Smokies. It offers rushing mountain streams, glimpses of old-growth forest, and a number of well-preserved log cabins, gristmills, and other historic buildings. Please note that the road is closed in winter. Before entering the Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail, a stop at the Noah “Bud” Ogle self-guiding nature trail offers a walking tour of an authentic mountain farmstead and surrounding hardwood forest. Highlights include a streamside tubmill and the Ogle’s handcrafted wooden flume plumbing system. Just beyond the Ogle farmstead is the trailhead for Rainbow Falls, one of the park's most popular waterfalls. The hike to the falls is 5.4 miles roundtrip and is considered moderately strenuous. If you plan to attempt this hike, be sure to wear sturdy hiking shoes or boots and carry plenty of water and snacks. A small waterfall on the Roaring Fork River Mike Maslona photo The entrance to the motor nature trail is located a short distance past the parking areas for Rainbow Falls. Several homes and other buildings have been preserved in this area. The trailhead for Grotto Falls, another of the park's most popular waterfalls, is located along the route. And a “wet weather” waterfall called Place of a Thousand Drips provides a splendid finale to your journey. An inexpensive booklet available at the beginning of the motor nature trail details landmarks along the route. Directions To access Roaring Fork, turn off the main parkway in Gatlinburg, TN at traffic light #8 and follow Historic Nature Trail Road to the Cherokee Orchard entrance to the national park. Just beyond the Rainbow Falls trailhead you have the option of taking the one-way Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail (closed in winter). Please note that buses, trailers, and motor homes are not permitted on the motor nature trail.

32 miles from me is Clingmans Dome. Clingmans Dome is the most accessible mountain top in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The 7-mile (11 km) Clingmans Dome Road, which is open annually from April 1 through November 30,[5] begins just past Newfound Gap and leads up the mountain to the Forney Ridge Parking Area, 330 feet (100 m) below the summit. A 1⁄2 mile (0.80 km) paved trail leads from the parking lot to the 45-foot (14 m) observation tower at the top of the mountain.[11] The short, steep trail provides a small visitor information center and park store staffed by the Great Smoky Mountains Association, garbage cans, and numerous benches to the side of the path. Vault toilet restrooms are available. The trail offers a glimpse of the often hostile environment of highland Appalachia, passing through the spruce-fir forest and its accompanying blowdowns and dead Fraser Firs. The Appalachian Trail (A.T.) crosses Clingmans Dome, passing immediately north of the observation tower. A 7.5-mile (12.1 km) leg of the trail connects the mountain with Newfound Gap, and provides the only access to the mountain in winter months. The nearest A.T. backcountry shelters are the Double Spring Gap Shelter, which is 2.6 miles (4.2 km) to the west near the Goshen Prong junction, and the Mount Collins shelter, which is 4 miles (6.4 km) to the east near the A.T.'s junction with the Sugarland Mountain Trail. Clingmans Dome is the upper terminus for several additional hiking trails, including the Forney Ridge Trail (to Andrews Bald) and the Forney Creek Trail (to the Benton MacKaye Trail on the shores of Fontana Lake). The western terminus of the Mountains-to-Sea Trail, which connects the Smokies to the Outer Banks of North Carolina, is located atop Clingmans Dome. It follows the Appalachian Trail for 3.8 miles (6.1 km) to the east, where it then begins to descend toward the Blue Ridge Parkway, via the Fork Ridge Trail.

I have hosted motorcycle enthusiasts who come here just to ride this legend trail. It is a short road between TN and NC with hundreds of hairpin turns. Photographers are always set up and you can find your photo online at Killboy. There are a ton of accidents on this road ~ it is not for a land yacht. 318 curves in 11 miles: America's number one motorcycle and sports car road

DollyWood Splash Country and Water Park is a lot to take in. If you have a family of 3-5 going, you may want to consider one adult buying a gold super pass to both parks. This would give that one adult free parking and 20% off of food.

Three minutes from my house is this Marina. Guests who bring their own boats, kayaks, canoes ~ and yes, I have had guests who have brought those things with them. This is the place to launch. They do not charge for the launch just beyond this marina. Either works. You can also rent boats from this marina. There is a restaurant there, but I have gone twice when wanting something close and the food has not been desirable. It would work if you were starving.
