Google maps is just showing the entrance to Cape Hatteras National Seashore. From Oregon Inlet to Rodanthe there are places to pull off on the side of the road and walk over to the beach and have a stunning, white sand beach just a hike over the dune all to yourself (or nearly all to yourself compared to Kill Devil Hills)>

From Oregon Inlet to Rodanthe there are places to pull off on the side of the road and walk over to the beach and have a stunning, white sand beach just a hike over the dune all to yourself (or nearly all to yourself compared to Kill Devil Hills)>

If you have a 4 wheel drive vehicle or are willing to hike out to the beach, this is a flat, white sand beach that is great for kids or those looking for a beach without steep drop offs or high surf.

Right across the street are a playground for the kids and Sam and Omie's restaurant - an Outer Banks institution. For snacks while you're hanging out on the beach here, try Cahoon's Market right next door. They have homemade salads and sandwiches as well as produce and gourmet items and beach gear.

There are 2 locations of this produce stand/seafood market. One is Ed's, right across the street on Hwy 158 in the Seagate North Shopping Center. He is a full-service produce stand and also sells local, seasonal produce, fresh local shrimp (in season), local honey and other local novelty food products. You can walk here and get your whole dinner! Open 9-6 from April to October.
If you are on your way down from points north, stop at the original (Ed's uncle) in Grandy across from the Cotton Gin. He sells produce and also a variety of seafood items at prices that you can't beat on the beach!

Its less than a mile away, so you could walk or ride bikes there.
