Hiking

Beautiful short hike in the aspens near Snowbowl. This is a great alternative if you don't want to commit to too long of a hike but want to get into the aspen groves. It is at a high elevation so be prepared to go slow if you are coming from sea level.

Looking for a good challenge? Hiking to the top of Arizona will certainly fill your cup. This ~10 mile round trip takes you from Aspens to Alpine through a switchbacking trail. Once on the summit ridge you'll have 360 views of northern Arizona. Don't stop short though, there are a number of false summits. You'll know when you get there though.

This trail at the base of Mt. Elden offers a good variety of terrain and views to the east of Flagstaff towards the Painted Desert. There are a number of very large juniper trees that are many 100's of years old! The trail is moderately challenging. If going in the warmer months, be sure to get an early start as it can heat up quickly.

Steep and rewarding, Elden Lookout Trail climbs about 2500 ft in 2.5 miles to reach the top of Mt. Elden and the lookout tower. From here you'll see the San Francisco Peaks, the Sedona area, all of Flagstaff, the Vermillon Cliffs to the northeast and the Painted Desert to the east. There is no water on the trail so be sure to plan ahead.

The most accessible trails are RIGHT out the door! Observatory Mesa has endless, non-technical trails to explore. From the cul de sac hop on the trails on the opposite side of the block wall and go exploring. There are MANY trails but if you get lost ever just go due south to the railroad tracks than head east towards town and you'll eventually see our neighborhood. Access to these trails are truly one of the joys to living in this location and we hope you enjoy them too!

Buffalo Park is a well maintained and travelled loop on the north side of town. It's a very easy 2 (or shorter) loop with views of the San Francisco Peaks and Mt. Elden. In the warmer months there is water and bathrooms at the parking area.

This is one of the most overlooked trails but one of the best! You will likely not see anyone on the trail but what you will see are sweeping views up and down Oak Creek Canyon. The trail starts at Oak Creek from Bootlegger Picnic area ($5 daily fee or annual interagency parks pass). You have to cross the creek and if take your time you (might) not get your feet wet. Once on the west side of Oak Creek the trail climbs up switchbacks for almost 2 miles to the canyon rim. Here catch your breath and get some great photos of Slide Rock, Mt. Wilson and the San Francisco Peaks. You can turn around here or go another 1/2 mile to the East Pocket lookout tower. Once back at the creek don't forget to take a plunge!

LOTS of aspen as the name would suggest but also a great jumping off point to hike the AZT towards Bismark Lake. The trail has a steep down to start but then is very moderate as it heads north. It's about 8 miles out and back passing through open meadows with sweeping views and aspen groves. Highly recommended in the fall months.

If you are looking for a challenging trail, Wilson Mtn will certainly do! You can access Wilson from the south via the trailhead at Midgley Bridge or via the north from the parking lot at Encinoso Picnic area. Either way it is a steep climb that will reward you with beautiful views over Sedona.

Wupatki is an hour+ drive from the AirBnB but is worth the travel. On the drive you'll pass by Sunset Crater, one of the best preserved cinder cones in all of northern Arizona. At Wupatki you can see multiple dwellings of indigenous people. The sites are very well preserved. Don't miss a side trip to Wukoki, which was the inspiration for our home. Be sure to drive the whole loop from the turn-off to Sunset Crater to the northern entrance off of 89a. By doing so you will get views of the Painted Desert to the east.
