Food scene

The best little bistro in Guatemala is just across the street from the house. Open from 5:30pm - 10pm, a very cozy and unique spot with the best food and service in town. I recommend eating upstairs in the loft OR if it is too busy you can always order take-away food and then bring it up to the terrace for a sunset meal with view of volcanoes. Grab a candle and buen provecho!

You feel like you've had chicken and potatoes just about every possible way, right? Wrong. I couldn't believe how delicious they prepared even the simplest of ingredients. Take that, and add on top a really beautiful courtyard, fantastic handmade tortillas, and an oven-made experience right in front of your eyes, and you get an authentic and unforgettable experience.

Antigua's Authentic Irish bar. Yes it is Irish owned. They have Guinness along with several other imported beers and liquors, including Strongbow Cider. A really beautiful view of the volcanoes and valley, a friendly bar with an expat vibe.

Fun staff and patio. Lively scene. Great place to grab bar food, fries, etc and very local, NOT an ex-pat haunt.

Expat central. Friendly place full of Characters. This place is honest and feels like a bar. No pretentiousness. You will hear joking, laughing, swearing, and great conversations you won't remember. I always pop in when i am passing through.

Sightseeing

A quick 10 minute hike up the hill is well worth the incredible view of the valley you receive. Walk all the way to the north end of 1a Avenida and the entrance to the stairs awaits. It is safe, but I recommend going midday or before sunset if going alone.

A five minute walk from the house, a perfect way to spend an hour or two on a sunny afternoon. This is one of my favorite places to go in Antigua. For just 15Q (2 dollars) you can stroll the beautiful gardens surrounded by the ruins of the catedral, visit the museum of Hermano Pedro, bring a picnic lunch if you like. There is an open air vendors market in the large parking lot where many cool souvenirs and gifts can be had. From Trip Advisor: One of many ruined churches in the city, this multi-domed church is often visited by pilgrims seeking answers to their prayers from Friar Hermano Pedro, the beatified 17th-century monk buried inside.

If you have at least a week in town, and would like some custom made boots or shoes, I recommend going up to Pastores via chicken bus or Uber/Taxi. There are dozens of cobblers along the main strip of town and Pastores is KNOWN for them. You can pick out various leathers, designs, textiles etc and the cobblers will literally trace your feet and take several other measurements in order to make a custom-to-your-feet pair of shoes or boots. The turn around time is three to four days and most of the cobblers will deliver the finished shoes to Antigua. There is also plenty of off-the-rack footwear available.

This is the supermarket of Antigua. A bustling, sprawling store - an experience onto itself - you'll understand when you go there!
