A "must-see" if you're in this neck of the woods. (Wikipedia says it's one of the most important castles in Scotland: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stirling_Castle) A bit pricey to get in (cheaper if you buy online) £18.00 (£16.50) for 16-59yrs and £11 (£10) for 5-15yrs, but worth it to get a sense of the history of Scotland. Nice views from the car park to the Ochils and beyond. The website is: https://www.stirlingcastle.scot

Replacing a flight of locks, the Falkirk Wheel is a rotating boat lift which carries canal boats between the Forth and Clyde canal and the Union canal. It is an amazing feat of engineering that has to be seen to be believed. There's a visitor centre and a water play park here too.

The Tak-Ma-Doon Road is not for the faint-hearted. A steep drive up the Kilsyth hills. About two-thirds of the way up there is a car park with beautiful views (on a clear day!) over the Kelvin valley and (in the distance) Glasgow. Watch out for the occasional cyclist making their way up or down this iconic road.

Allegedly built as an "unsinkable ship" there are amazing views of the bridges across the Firth of Forth from here. The castle also has some nice exhibits/plaques showing you what life in the castle would have been like.

Auchinstarry Marina and sensory gardens, 10 minutes from Banton by car or a lovely hours walk along the Forth and Clyde canal. Arts & Culture

Culross is one of our favourite day trips. It’s so atmospheric and a great mix of history, fun and relaxation. There’s the orange palace (the garden here was the herb garden in Outlander), an abbey, the ruins of a monastery which can be climbed, ( it’s welcomed, there’s a ladder up! ) a market cross (also of Outlander fame) and a brilliant playpark at the waterfront. A lesser known but lovely spot is the community gardens just past the lion pub. If you’re lucky enough to be there when the ice cream van is at the front, try their home made lemon sorbet, is worth the trip for that alone!! The village was once famous for its coal-mine which ran under the River Forth. The coal was used to help dry salted fish which were then exported to lots of places, including The Netherlands. The ships had to return with roof tiles as ballast (weight to steady the ships in the water), which is how the houses of Culross came to have their distinctive red roofs.

According to the guide book this is the best Japanese garden in the western world! It really is wonderful and is such a peaceful and beautiful place to visit. It’s popular and they don’t let it get too busy so book in advance, especially for the morning slots (you need to book your arrival slot but can stay as long as you want). There’s a cafe at the garden (with lovely sorbet) and a forest walk with a snack cabin and children’s play ground (with picnic benches) on the other side of the car park. It’s 35 minutes from Banton and if you have time on the way home, the hill foot villages of Dollar and Alva are a nice place to explore! Or you could combine it with a visit to Stirling.

If you're in the Stirling area pop up to Dunblane, it's only 15 minutes drive on the motorway from Stirling. Home of tennis champion Andy Murray (look out for the gold postbox), Dunblane has a lovely 13th century cathedral (and entry is free). There's a nice little coffee shop not far from the cathedral called "The Beech Tree Café".

Callendar House is tucked away in what looks like a high-rise estate. Once you're past the last block of flats you get to see the lovely Callendar Park and the house within it. There is also a kitchen where, if you're lucky, a "kitchen maid" will tell you about the life of the kitchen in olden times. There is also a little tea shop for snacks.

If by "culture" you mean a medieval village then this is the place for you. The website is here: http://www.duncarron.com/ Check the website and Facebook page (link on the website) before going to avoid disappointment as it’s run by volunteers and also used for movies/series so may not be open when you visit us. Built on the site of an old ironworks, Summerlee tells the story of this part of Scotland when mining and ironworking were the dominant industries. Very informative (free entry) museum with things to do for the kids, as well as a wee tram ride, a reconstructed street "through the ages" and a visit "down the mine" (over 5s only). Parks & Nature

Landscaped grounds, waterfalls and a walled garden (the garden closes over the winter) make this a lovely place to visit. It’s a lovely 45 minute walk from Tin Lid and Keppochhill via Banton Loch or a 5 minute drive. There a small cafe on the edge of the walled garden and a great children’s playground too.

A brilliant day out in nature half an hour’s drive from Banton. Hill walking, a cave, waterfalls and spectacular views. There’s plenty of history here too as there were once 8 mills on this site and you can still see the evidence with impressive pipe work and water wheels and an old mill building (now converted into flats). Big Feed Street Food Social. This is an occasional, weekend, indoor street food market with some lovely stalls. Very atmospheric. Live music. Plenty of veggie/vegan and gluten free options.

Entertainment & Activities

The oldest purpose-built cinema in Scotland, built in 1912. Lovingly restored in 2006-2008. A trip back in time and a glimpse of what the movie experience used to be like. They play arthouse and blockbusters. (Watch out for the Jeely Jar Specials when you can bring a clean jelly (jam) jar with matching lid and get two tickets for the price of one!) They also have autism friendly showings.

Not sure why it's called "The Time Capsule" (sounds like a museum?) but this is a great indoor water park for the whole family. There's also an ice rink if that's more your cup of tea.

There is a bouldering park here which is great fun for all ages (from beginner to experienced). The "easy" boulders are fine for most, bring your own ropes and harnesses for the more difficult ones. There's also a very good playground, a nice little boardwalk along the river and a wee food/coffee stall.

If you like railways or steam engines then this is the place for you! Scotland's largest railway museum and the chance to have a short trip on a steam-powered train. The website with opening times is here: http://www.bkrailway.co.uk

A nearby family-friendly swimming pool with slides for the kids and a wave machine. The water's at a good temperature too. It’s not a destination spot but is a good place for a rainy day if your here for a longer stay.
