It's the gateway to DownEast, so there are grocery stores, chain restaurants and big box stores, too. 5-10 minutes from the house, it's easy to pop in to Ellsworth to pick something up. Don't forget to stop at L.L. Bean, Marden's or Reny's - it wouldn't be a vacation in Maine if you didn't!

Don't forget to stop at L.L. Bean, Marden's or Reny's - it wouldn't be a vacation in Maine if you didn't!
This VERY popular little town is only 17 miles from the house. Plan ahead for traffic in the height of the summer tourist season. Still, it's worth it for the restaurants, shopping, boat tours and access to the rest of Mount Desert Island.

Recommended by one of our guests who visits the area often. Stop by for a LARGE slice of pie - they always go for coconut cream. Enjoy!

Our reno has taken A LOT of take out from China Hill. Family-run, always busy, usually greasy = it's a great spot for some guilty-pleasure take out and potent drinks.

Great restaurant in a very cool, historic building. Mike used to work in this place as a teenager! (It was a different restaurant then.) We had a great birthday dinner here this year. Warm, inviting, delicious.

My mom's favorite spot for breakfast in the area - she always gets crepes. They also do lunch. Very friendly service and great location on the water. Sit outside and enjoy the view.
