Tavistock is a thriving, beautifully friendly market town that is worthy of any visitor. An ancient stannary town and home of the cream tea, Tavistock is the only town in Devon to hold world heritage status. The vibrancy and uniqueness of Tavistock is undeniable with a range of beautiful local independent shops which are a far cry from today's typical high street. Not to be overlooked is the famous pannier market or the award-winning farmers’ market. It is truly a shoppers paradise. Tavistock has direct access to Dartmoor. The Western Moor is magical and fantastic for walking, cycling and riding. Several National Trust properties are in easy reach: Lydford Gorge, Buckland Abbey and Cotehele are all nearby. National Cycle Route 27, Drakes Trail and the West Devon Way to Plymouth are all easily accessible from the town centre. There are guided walks from and around the town, wild swimming in the rivers, a golf course, museum, gym, swimming pool and arts centre.

The village of Calstock is situated on the River Tamar several miles east of Callington and 12 miles upstream from Plymouth in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. It is a pretty village with cottages lining the narrow streets as they climb up the steep bank of the Tamar. Calstock Gatehouse Calstock Gatehouse Calstock is dominated by the magnificent railway viaduct which was built in 1907 and is one of the last great railway viaducts. Standing at 120 feet tall with 12 sixty foot arches, the viaduct carries the Tamar Valley railway which runs from Plymouth to Gunnislake. About a mile down the Tamar is Cotehele, a mediaeval/Tudor house and estate now owned by the National Trust. Built between 1485 and 1627 it is a fine example, and considered one of the least-altered houses of the period in the United Kingdom. Along with the restored working watermill, the riverside gardens and quay are well worth a visit.

Burrator Reservoir is situated within Dartmoor, and the tranquil water and surrounding mixed woodland contrasts sharply with the open moor and the rugged Dartmoor tors. A trip here can be combined with a walk across the moors, or enjoyed as a trip of its own with plenty to do – from walking and taking in the views, to fishing for rainbow and brown trout (just be sure to get a permit, available online or by calling South West Lakes). Devon has relatively few lakes, but the situation and quality of these make them a hidden gem in Devon’s crown.

Brent Tor is one of the most impressive rock outcrops in Dartmoor. With St Michael’s Church at its top, it makes a distinctive and famous silhouette on the Dartmoor skyline. The tor is unusual as it is one of the few on Dartmoor not to be made of granite. In fact, it is formed from basaltic lava which flowed some 350 million years ago into a shallow sea that covered the area during the Lower Carboniferous and Devonian periods. As the lavas flowed out into the sea some solidified into globular masses known as pillow lavas. Others were broken up by explosive contact with the sea water. This lava formed a mound on the sea floor which was then eroded by sea currents with the resulting debris being washed down the slopes of the mound. Debris of this nature can still be seen loose on the southern slopes of the tor.

A breath-taking panorama, no trip to Plymouth is complete without a visit to Plymouth Hoe. With unbeatable views across Plymouth Sound, it’s the perfect place to spend a sunny day, enjoying a picnic on the grass or taking a dip in the art deco Tinside Lido. Standing tall on the luscious green-lawned expanse of the Hoe is the iconic Smeaton’s Tower lighthouse. Gaze down at the shoreline and you’ll see the glorious Tinside Lido, open to the public for bathing during the summer months. It is here where Sir Francis Drake, intrepid explorer and local hero, is immortalised in a statue, situated just a few metres from the green where he finished his game of bowls before heading out to defeat the Spanish Armada in 1588. At the eastern end of the Hoe you’ll find The Royal Citadel, the most impressive 17th century fortress in Britain and for many years England’s most important defence against attack from the sea. The Citadel has been in constant military occupation since it was built and today it is home to some of Plymouth’s modern heroes – the troops of 29 Commando Royal Artillery. Plymouth Hoe is also host to many fantastic annual events including the famous Plymouth Armed Forces Day and the British Firework Championships.

From the main car park, follow the path at the top of the car park to the right hand side of the entrance to Badgers Holt. Follow the footpath through the woods, keeping the old wall on your left hand side. When you reach the end of the wall drop downhill about 20 metres towards the river and take the well-defined path, keeping the river on your left. Make your way along the river, you will come to an obvious clearing. As you walk along the river look out for all sorts of dragonflies, damselflies and butterflies, species you might see include the Golden Ringed Dragonfly, Keeled Skimmer and Small Pearl Bordered Fritillary. If you’re really lucky you might catch a glimpse of a Kingfisher or try looking for signs of otters, such as footprints in the sand or spraint on the rocks. Continue walking along the river, you will pick up another clear path, taking you back into another wooded area. The route here becomes rocky, pick your way over the boulders, over a small stream and carry on up the river.

This site takes its name from a small oak wood. This amazing woodland is important for the mosses and lichens that festoon the trees and the impressive granite boulders found on the site.

Sheltered from the wind, the sun warms our backs as we sit and watch the sunshine glint off the still water. If we stand we can see miles of moorland stretched out before us, Great Mis Tor and Little Mis Tor behind us and Kings Tor to the right. Although less than 20 minutes drive from Tavistock, we could be in the middle of nowhere.

The dramatic nature of Great Staple Tor has made it one of the moor’s most popular spots for photographers and walkers. It’s also relatively easy to access, just north west of Merrivale and with plenty of places to park nearby. The tor is a mass of granite stacks and outcrops, with an impressive variety of shapes and height to the rock formations. The tor can be taken in as part of a circular walk with Cox Tor and Roos Tor, while it offers great views of Roos Tor, White Tor and Great Links Tor in the north, Great Mis Tor in the north east and to the south east, North Hessary Tor and Foggintor Quarry. Pew Tor and the Tamar Valley AONB are visible in the south. https://visitdartmoor.co.uk/things-to-do/moors-tors

The common also provides many wonderful walk and cycle trails, as well as a unique granite church. There is a regularly changing local real ale and cider lineup, as well as special cocktails. We welcome dogs and is the perfect place to stop off whilst walking or cycling through. It is a classic country pub with an open fire and log burner as well and some exposed stone walls.
