Pica Pica is our personal favourite: 6 oysters straight out of the sea and a glass of wine for 7 euros.

Right in the heart of the Camargue, this fishing town with white houses is the pilgrimage centre for gypsies. The Notre-Dame-de-la-Mer church, built in the 12th century and fortified in the 15th century, really looks like a fortress. In the summer, the seaside resort of Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer comes alive with its beaches, its cafés, its shops and its restaurants offering the Camargue specialities, such as gardiane (bull stew) and telline, a type of small clam.

White ponies, black bulls, pink flamingoes. Something for everyone in the Camargue. The Camargue is a natural region located to the south of Arles, France, between the Mediterranean Sea and the two arms of the Rhône River delta. The eastern arm is called the Grand Rhône and the western one is the Petit Rhône. Camargue was designated a “Wetland of International Importance” on 1 December 1986. Its vast expanses give it a special atmosphere to be found nowhere else. It is paradise for migratory birds, a nesting area for flamingos, and home of bulls and horses.

Winding little streets leading to spectacular views of the region and a castle at the top, with some charming churches in between. Stop off for an ice cream or a crepe on the way.

Climb up to the church roof to enjoy fabulous views of the harbour and the marshlands. Strongly recommend you buy an ice cream from one of the stalls to take with you.

One of the reasons we fell in love with Arles is the international photography festival. The festival showcases images from renowned and up and coming photographers that often have never been seen by the public before in some of the most amazing buildings in Arles, ones that are usually closed to the public. It usually runs from July 1st to September.

Even before you've stepped into the museum, the hosepipe fountain is a delight. Arles was where Van Gogh produced his finest masterpieces – within the space of just 15 months between February 1988 and May 1888. Inaugurated in April 2014, the Foundation Vincent van Gogh Arles pays due homage to the work of Van Gogh while at the same time exploring his impact upon art today.

Food scene

This is our favourite: Charles the owner is passionate about extraordinary local produce, and delivers it in the most simple and delicious ways. Try the foot long charcuterie board, with the local wine. Great for seafood in the evenings and hearty lunches. It's in the most beautiful square in Arles, perfect for people watching.

Eat dinner in this romantic cobbled street and watch the world go without the mad hustle of the main square. Great food, and some of our favourite wines

Aperol Spritz? Drink the ultimate one at another one of our favourites just inside the city walls. Food is excellent (vegetarian mozzerella/aubergine/pepper stack is to die for), and the indoor spaces are just as amazing as the outside.

Everything from incredible fruit and veg, to irresistible cheese and charcuteries - head to the market to stock up on all local treats. The market is over a km long and has everything your heart desires, live chickens to Marseille soap, summer dresses to tapenade. The main market is on Saturday morning on Boulevard des Lices and the smaller, more local market on Wednesday at Boulevard Emile Combes.

A family owned restaurant that has a broader menu than most. Delicious prawns à la plancha, salads and very thin pizzas in a beautiful location. Ask for a table on the terrace in Summer and enjoy the light hitting the ancient buildings in the square. We've been eating here for years and it feels like coming home when we see the owner Davide and have our first sip of rosé.

Neighbourhoods

La Roquette is one of the oldest residential areas in Arles, full of small streets that are full of charm and character. People often leave their doors open and there's a real feeling of community. There's lot's of small shops, cafe's, theatre and a museum so well worth losing yourself there for a couple of hours.
