- a football-field-sized public square designed in the first century B.C. As in Roman times, it's the centre of civic and religious life, with St Donatus' Church dominating one side of it. Among the ruins of temples and colonnades stands one intact Roman column, which in the Middle Ages served as a shame post where wrongdoers were chained and publicly humiliated. Nearby are more Roman remains, including altars with reliefs of the mythical figures Jupiter Ammon and Medusa. On the top you can see the hollows used in blood sacrifices. It is believed that this area was a temple dedicated to Jupiter, Juno and Minerva dating from the 1st century BC.

- Installed in 2005 by Nikola Bašić, immensely popular Sea Organ, has given a new dimension to the city's waterfronts. Sea Organ is constructed from holes drilled into the marble, linked to 35 organ pipes beneath the waves. These create unworldly sounds randomly dictated by the ebb and flow of the water, an unusually comforting feeling as you lie on the flat stones and sunbathe. Sea Organ is combination of art, musical architecture and science project and in 2006 won the European Prize for Urban Public Space.

- The jewel in Zadar’s crown is the church of this Benedictine convent, restored after bombing damage during World War II, a 16th-century remake of an early Romanesque one dating back to 1066. The nuns are responsible for the care of the stunning Treasury next door, known as the Gold and Silver of Zadar (Zlato i Srebro Zadra). Set over two floors, the Treasury houses Zadar’s finest ecclesiastical artefacts, including delicately crafted examples of Byzantine ornamentation, and religious Venetian art from the 16th century.

- Behind his longer-established Sea Organ installation, Nikola Bašić has devised another creation powered by nature: Greeting to the Sun. It depicts the solar system in the form of a circle, illuminated by photovoltaic cells in irregular but bewitching colours and patterns as the sun moves across the sky then spreads out across it in the panoply of Zadar’s celebrated fiery sunset. Not as immediate as its wave-driven partner work, Greeting to the Sun requires a lot more thought and investigation on the part of the viewer – or the casual passer-by strolling along Obala kralja Petra Krešimira IV.

-While this 17th century baroque church is pretty enough, it's what lies inside that makes it truly noteworthy. The body of St Simeon, one of 4 patron saints of Zadar, is miraculously preserved and now is presented to the public from the open silver casket. The sarcophagus of St Simeon is a masterpiece of medieval goldsmithery.

green markets

Every day hard working people from the countryside and nearby islands bring their fresh products early in the dawn on the market. Here, the area of the market is not just a place where people buy and sell goods, it is a common area where everyone mingles and meets the old friends. There are so many choices: fresh fish and other sea food, varieties of fruits and vegetables, hard and soft cheeses, honey from the Velebit Mountain, fresh eggs, Dalmatian smoked ham, grappas, liqueurs, wine…

On this 1.5 kilometer long stretch of coast you can find many different great swimming opportunities, most of which are pebble beaches. Unique here are especially the beautiful blue sea colors, but also the good water quality, which invite you to swim and splash in the sea. Natural shade is provided by the tall pine trees, which give the coast a unique charm.

Punta Bajlo Beach is one of the most idyllic beaches in Zadar. It is located on a small wooded peninsula about 3 kilometers from the old town and is popular with locals but also tourists. Here everything is still really laid down, which gives this stretch of coast a very special ambience! The wonderful mix of pebble beach, rocky sections and concreted sunbathing areas, where magnificent sea colors invite you to swim, is wonderful. Just behind the beach is a fragrant pine forest that provides cool shade and a relaxing atmosphere. Tip: We also recommend the charming beach restaurant, which serves grilled dishes and delicious pizza with a fabulous view of the sea.
