New Belgium Brewing Company is right next to the French Broad River. Walking trails along the river are accessible by going over a pedestrian bridge and down to the river. Wonderful outdoor seating, very well maintained. And of course, the beer is awesome! It's 8 min from us during low traffic time.
You can also bring your own food and drink their beer. They don't have a restaurant, but they have food trucks with a nice selection.

Bull Gap Trailhead - Rattlesnake Lodge Trail

PS: Woodfin Riverside Park is 5 min south from this park, and the Woodfin park has restrooms and a shelter in case of rain.

1080 Old Marshall Hwy20 min from us. Beautiful park for sitting close to the river and eating a picnic. There is a walking path that brings you to some large beautiful and accessible rocks in the river. It's lovely to sit there and listen to the sound of the water. (No public restrooms).
PS: Woodfin Riverside Park is 5 min south from this park, and the Woodfin park has restrooms and a shelter in case of rain.

This is one hour away, but the whole drive there on the Blue Ridge Parkway is already an amazing experience. Absolutely breathtaking views!! Entrance to the Mount Mitchell State Park is free. You can hike up to Mount Mitchell, a 2 mile hike that might take 90 minutes or you can drive up pretty close and then just take a shorter walk to the peak.
