Scotland's most visited art gallery and the centre for Glasgow's extensive modern and contemporary art collection. Found in the heart of Glasgow in Royal Exchange Square, GoMA is FREE to enter. The gallery provides a thought-provoking programme including displays of local and international artworks from the City’s collection alongside temporary exhibitions and events with artists. There is also a permanent display that charts the history of the building. GoMA is part of Glasgow's civic museum service and has a changing programme of museums' collection and loaned-in exhibitions and associated public programme. Have a look at their website for the full programme. There's also an opportunity to visit a great shop, lovely library with free internet access/PCs and cafe. Outside the gallery sits the statue of the Duke of Wellington that is often adorned by a traffic cone. Sometimes confused for being an art installation that the Gallery is responsible for, the cone(s) on Wellington's statue are placed by daring passers-by, usually very late at night. It seems to have been going on for about 30 years or so.

Throughout the year George Square is a focal point for many popular events such as Piping Live! and Glasgow Loves Christmas! This iconic central city square was turned into a 1940s film set for Frank's memorable proposal to Claire in season one. The scene included old-fashioned cars and old-fashioned outfits, with the men trooping around the square wearing trenchcoats amid the real-life architecture we see in the area today. George Square is the principal civic square in Glasgow. It is named after King George III. Laid out in 1781, today Glasgow Square is home to the headquarters of Glasgow City Council, and showcases an important collection of statues and monuments, including those dedicated to famous scots such as Robert Burns, James Watt, Sir Robert Peel and Sir Walter Scott.

Glasgow Cathedral stands near the heart of Scotland’s largest city. It’s the only medieval cathedral on the Scottish mainland to have survived the Protestant Reformation of 1560 virtually intact. Glasgow Cathedral is one of the finest buildings of the 1200s to survive in mainland Scotland. Parts of it are older still. Building fabric from Bishop Jocelin’s time (1174–99) is still standing. He is recorded as ‘gloriously enlarging’ his cathedral in 1181. Fragments from the previous cathedral have also been found. Around it there used to be a chanonry – a precinct where the bishops (and, later, archbishops) and clergy lived. A thriving burgh sprang up to its south and west under the bishops’ patronage. Since then, the burgh has grown into the great metropolis we know today.

The Royal Exchange in Royal Exchange Square from Queen Street, 1834. The building was erected in 1778-1780 as the town house of William Cuninghame of Lainshaw, a rich tobacco lord, and was acquired in 1817 by the Royal Bank of Scotland. Ten years later the architect David Hamilton began converting it to become the city's new Exchange, adding features such as the double portico facade and a cupola and a newsroom. An equestrian statue of the Duke of Wellington was erected at the Queen Street entrance in 1844. The Exchange served as a meeting place where merchants and other businessmen gathered to deal in commodities such as coal, iron and sugar and in services such as shipping and insurance. The city's first telephone exchange was located here in 1880. Ironically, the need for a business exchange building declined once telephones came into common use. The Corporation acquired the Royal Exchange in 1949 and five years later Stirling's Library was relocated there from Miller Street. In 1996 the building was converted to house the Gallery of Modern Art.

Glasgow is not short of hipster cafés serving great coffee and cakes – and Short Long Black on Victoria Road on the city’s Southside, with its original painted walls, fairy-lit beams and potted plants interiors appears at first to be another cast in the same mould. But this spot has originality in spades.
