The Cavan Bakery, now run by the 3rd generation of the Cavan family, is passionate about providing its customers with fantastic-tasting, freshly baked goods as well as excellent customer service. Perfect pitstop to stock up on outstanding freshly filled rolls and sandwiches, hot pastries and sausage rolls if you’re just about to jump onto the train to London. The coffee is good too.

Parks & Nature

Take a long walk, or even a scenic jog through truly beautiful scenery, with lovely flower gardens at the heart of the park. There is a cafe for meals, snacks and drinks as well as a playground for children. The park has lots of wildlife, including deer, waterfowl, fish and parakeets. Great for serious photographers.

Richmond Park is the largest of the Royal Parks, occupying some 2,500 acres. There are hundreds of red and fallow deer roaming free across it, presumably much happier without having to listen out for the 'View halloo!' of one of Henry VIII's hunting parties. Within the park's bounds are the Palladian splendour of White Lodge and Pembroke Lodge, childhood home to philosopher Bertrand Russell and now a café. From the park's highest point, there are unobstructed views of St Paul's Cathedral, over 12 miles in the distance.

Kew is London's largest UNESCO World Heritage site offering unique landscapes, vistas and iconic architecture from every stage of the Gardens' history. Nowadays the Gardens stand at a whopping 300 acres, but they started out a little more humbly in the back yard of what was once the royal palace – favoured most by George III. There’s loads to see here, whether you like green stuff or not. The grand Victorian glasshouses remain a favourite with visitors, one of which (Temperate House) holds the record for the largest surviving Victorian glasshouse.

Discovering the lavish spaces where the notorious Henry VIII once resided, indulged and occasionally terrorised his court, particularly his six unfortunate wives.

I don’t think I have ever walked by these red phone boxes having the domino effect and not seen people taking photos on them. Kingston has a great riverside but these phone boxes are also a great tourist attraction. Vibrant and cool, right there in the middle of Kingston town centre, great addition to the grey dreariness of every day buildings.

No trip to Windsor could possibly be complete without a visit to amazing Windsor Castle, the family home to British kings and queens for over 1,000 years. The size of the Castle is breath taking, in fact it is the largest and oldest occupied Castle in the world and it’s where Her Majesty The Queen chooses to spend most of her private weekends. You might even time your visit when she is in residence! Look at the flag flying from the Castle’s Round Tower; if it’s the Royal Standard The Queen will be there too.

Visiting Strawberry Hill is a truly theatrical experience. On approach to the building it is immediately apparent from the whitewashed walls and crenelations that this is no ordinary stately home. Once inside the visitor will find the rooms magically lit by a unique collection of renaissance glass with a gloomy castle-like hall and grey gothic staircase leading dramatically to the magnificence of the gallery and state apartment. Between 2007 and 2015 the structure of the building was saved from ruin and the eccentric interiors have been fully restored to their late 18th century style.

Sightseeing

You can walk on the south side of the river Thames from Kingston to about Thames Ditton or all the way to Hampton Court on the north side. There are many riverside restaurants in Kingston, walk, cycle or even run along the path. Experience the varied 'boat life' cruising down the Thames, ranging from the rowers practising for their next race, to the small motorboats, to the much larger 'gin palaces' of the more well-to-do. There are also restaurants and pubs at the Hampton Court end (mainly in East Molesey across the river); and, of course, Hampton Court itself. If you don't want to walk both ways, you can take the train back to Hampton.
