This neighborhood is all about the man-made lake in the middle (designed by the same gents that did NY’s Central Park). A great place for people watching, going for a run/walk, or just finding a restful park to hangout in. Nearby are plenty of restaurants and Zoey’s frozen yogurt.

This neighborhood has it’s own developmental crises as a former artsy hangout that now sees mostly yuppies, but arts-minded folks all the same. More high-end shopping as well as an eclectic offering at the Sunday Market (mostly wares, some food trucks). There is an arcade bar here, and the Ballroom is a meat market but the closest place to get your dance on.

This neighborhood is in an interesting flux between historic Nordic settlement, commercial fishermen, and a rash of condos. Great for shopping shiny and fancy to vintage records. Live music scene. Eateries and bars galore. All the action tends to be on Ballard Avenue, with some stuff on NW Market Street. The closest movie theater is here. Great Sunday markets (food and wares) mostly year round. Lots of microbreweries have popped up here in the last few years.

This neighborhood is pretty much an extension of Greenwood and the two are frequently referred to “Phinneywood.” Only a 3 minute drive south or a solid walk south on Greenwood Ave, there is more to check out and is worth it if you like exploring by foot.

General Seattle tips

For the tourist circuit, consult the internet to find what most interests your individual style. These are just a few local tips to help a traveler out! The space needle is actually pretty short and rather over-priced. If you are looking for a bird’s eye view, go to the Observation deck on the Columbia tower for something like $5. Or just get a drink at the space needle bar and I think they waive the “observation deck” cover charge. Downtown has some great museums, famous Pike Place Market and the Waterfront, but is otherwise like all urban centers – dirty and full of tourists with a splash of “who is that man screaming at?” The Capitol Hill neighborhood is the real center of Seattle; physically and as the place where everyone seems to move when they come to this city of transplants. All walks of life can be seen; from real Catholic school girls to the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence (men in drag who satirize issues of gender and morality). Dick’s burgers (of Macklemore music video fame) and Sir Mixalots “My Posse’s on Broadway” are from this wild and zany place.
