Hill Walking

707 metres high. The car park for Tinto is just off the A73 south of Lanark, at Fullburn on the south side of the main road. From the car park follow the clear path through the gate and up past a memorial bench. The width of the path is testament to the popularity of this hill. Soon the remains of a roman fort are passed on the left, however this is easier to make out from higher up the path where the double ring formation can easily be made out. The climb time is approx 2hrs.

Boasting a restaurant, Shieldhill Castle is set in Libberton, Biggar and also provides a bar and a garden. Reported hauntings! A grey lady ghost has been sighted by hotel guests in the corridors of the building. One belief is she was a former occupant of the house who fell for someone of a lower social class. The story goes that she killed herself as a result of her father forbidding their relationship. Additionally a male ghost clothed in a what appears to be butler's uniform has been reported in the hotel's former staff quarters

Looking for a day out with a difference? Look no further – we are a 4 Star Visit Scotland Attraction. Only 8 miles from the M74, The Museum of Lead Mining in Wanlockhead sits amidst the Lowther Hills, directly on the Southern Upland Way. The Museum is a not-for-profit registered charity run by a Board of Trustees dedicated to preserving the rich mining and social heritage and history of the area. Discover our 18th century lead mine where you will experience the thrill of going on the only underground mine tour in Scotland. Take a glimpse into the past by visiting the miners’ cottages and see how the miners and their families lived during the periods of 1750, 1850 & 1910. The Miners’ Library is one of three subscription libraries in Scotland set up by the miners themselves. Due to it’s significance the library has been given Recognised Collection Status by the Scottish Government. A fantastic display of minerals, gold, mining and local artefacts are found in our Visitor Centre, along with our gift shop and tearoom. You can also purchase a license and go gold panning. Gold can be found in many areas of Scotland and particularly in the Lowther Hills around Wanlockhead and Leadhills where gold panning has been popular for centuries. Gold is found in the sands and gravels in the burns which act as a natural means of concentrating the gold. At various times prospectors were drawn to the Wanlockhead locality in search of gold. The first documented evidence of the recovery of gold in the area is from the reign of King James IV of Scotland in the early 16th century.

New Lanark was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2001. New Lanark is an exceptional example of a purpose-built 18th century mill village. Thanks to an ongoing process of conservation and rehabilition spanning almost half a century, the appearance of the village today is close to that of the early nineteenth century, when the mill buildings formed one of the largest industrial groups in the world. At New Lanark, David Dale and Robert Owen created a model for industrial communities that was to spread across the world in the 19th and 20th centuries, establishing a milestone in social and industrial history, and having lasting influences on society, even two hundred years on. New Lanark's incription as a UNESCO World heritage site confirms it's Outstanding Universal Value. You can read more about New Lanark and its Outstanding Universal Value on the UNESCO website. You can visit a historic Classroom, Tenement through time, Annie McCloud Experience or visit the shop or the cafe. You could pop across the road and finish off with dinner at the New Lanark Hotel.

The stunning landscape and views at St. Mary's Loch will take your breath away - especially if you catch it on one of its "still" days. St Mary's Loch lies right in the heart of the Scottish Borders, easily accessible from Moffat yet with a feeling of remoteness. The Southern Upland Way passes Tibbie Shiels Inn at the southwest end of the loch before following the shore to Dryhope Bridge on the A708 Moffat to Selkirk Road. Tibbie Shiels Inn provides a useful start point for walking and the routes provide many good views over the loch and hills beyond.
