Sightseeing outside Dubrovnik

Some of our favourite places to visit outside the city, some of which are easy self-guided tours
We love the ferries to the Elaphite islands in the North - one of these is Lopud (Sipan and Kolocep are the others). They are home to about 1,000 people and have scheduled ferry services. The Jadrolinija ferries run year-round to the Elaphite Islands Lopud, Kolocep and Sipan: Buy food/snacks/drinks at a local baker/supermarket and get the bus or walk to Gruz (Dubrovnik's "new" harbour), and take the regular ferry service at 10:00 a.m. time (there is also a 2pm ferry but the 10am gives you more sunshine). Sipan is quieter, Kolocep and Lopud busier in summer- but all nice islands and quieter than Dubrovnik. The local boat is fun (sit on top in the open), great scenery, (there is a local bus on Sipan). We like the 10:00 am Jadrolinija ferry from Dubrovnik.

Being relatively close to Dubrovnik, Mostar in Bosnia has such a very different look and feel - which makes for a wonderful day trip. This is one of Joan's favourite destinations as she finishes her gift shopping in the wonderful bazar. We provide a private day tour to Mostar. Ask us for availability.

Montenegro lies just to the South of Dubrovnik, Like Korcula, one of my childhood haunts in the days of Jugoslavia. The old historic walled cities of Budva and Kotor around the Bay of Kotor are scenic gems with beautiful alleyways to wander and cafes to observe the local culture.

The historic island and old city of Korcula was a boyhood haunt of mine. Take a short car or foot-passenger ferry from Orebic on the Peljesac peninsular - the foot ferry goes straight to the old city (recommended). Korcula's old city is thought to be the birthplace of Marco Polo. With its historic white limestone houses, narrow alleys and beautiful windows to the azure blue Adriatic, it is a photographers dream.

The Konavle valley lies just to the south of Dubrovnik and contains a wonderful set of culture, history, food and wine to experience. We love the beautifully restored castle of Sokolgrad, the old roman town of Cavtat and the old watermills in Gruda. Gruda is also home to a local artist who has been diligently working to preserve the silk industry, the basis for the culturally unique and designs in the wonderful local costumes handed down through generations. These costumes are proudly worn at Konavoski Dvori, a restaurant built in an old watermill in Gruda - worth a visit (ask for the "lamb under the bell").

Just 20km north of Dubrovnik lies the Peljesac peninsular. In ancient times a set of stone walls between the towns of Ston and Mali-Ston barred access to valuable salt ponds. Salt and Oysters are still farmed in these azure blue waters. Visit the salt ponds and taste the magnificent oysters The walls have been beautifully restored and now provide a wonderful walk across between those towns across the peninsular. A stop at the Kapitanova Kuca restaurant in Ston always serves as our families reward for this walk.

Wine! The hot summer sun reflected off the Adriatic and dry rocky soils provide the basis for the incredible wines of the Peljesac peninsular. The prime area is known as Dingac. We've met many wonderful winemakers in the region over the years and visited many of their great wineries, but all wines are not created equal. Come with us on our private wine tour and we'll explore, learn and taste the best of this region.

Things we love to see and do in Dubrovnik

Over the 15 years we've had our home in Dubrovnik, we've built and refined our "Top things to do" - we know you'll love them
Ride on the Cable Car to Srd (pronounced “serge”), the hill above Dubrovnik) for superb views that should not be missed. It runs from just outside the Ploce Gate. At the top you have the old Fort Imperial (built by Napoleon in 1808), two viewing terraces with binoculars, a snack bar, and - Dubrovnik Cable Car: If you have time during you visit to Dubrovnik, ride on the Cable Car for superb views that should not be missed. The cable car travels 778 meters up to a height of 450 meters above sea level to Srd (pronounced “serge”) Hill. It runs from just outside the Ploce Gate. The original cable car had been closed since 1991, when it was bombed during the conflict. It reopened to the public for the first time on 10 July 2011. The web site says that on a clear day you can see up to 70km (37 miles) – but we haven’t been able to test that yet  At the top you have the old Fort Imperial (built by Napoleon in 1808), two viewing terraces with binoculars, a restaurant/snack bar overlooking the old town of Dubrovnik. The cars hold 32 passengers and negotiate the ascent in about 3 minutes. The cost of the return journey is 140 Kuna for adults and 60 Kuna for children. The fitter individuals may want to walk up or down as an alternative. A winding walk known as ‘The Serpentine’ also climbs the sage-covered hillside where sheep graze. The cable car operator sells one-way tickets (for about 60% of the cost of a round trip). You'll see the switchback trail from the cable car as you ride up -- and it is also visible from the Old Town. The walk down takes about 30 minutes and ends in the Pile (the Northern gate to the old city) neighborhood just outside of the Old Town walls.

Walk the historic old town: Start with a walk along Stradun(the main street), then explore some of its narrow streets and small squares, monumental ramparts and fortresses. Dubrovnik’s numerous museums and galleries contain many of the jewels of Croatian heritage. It’s a city of a unique political and cultural history. The state of the Republic of Dubrovnik (Ragusa) existed from 1272 until 1806), is inscribed on the List of World Heritage Sites by UNESCO). - Tour the Rectors Palace for a great look at Dubrovnik in the Renaissance (remember, entrance to many of these historic sites are covered by your Dubrovnik Card. - The main monastic orders have a monastery and church in Dubrovnik including the beautiful Franciscan Monastery, cloister and pharmacy. St Blaise is the Patron Saint of Dubrovnik as you’ll be reminded by the many statues all around the city. The church of St Blaise is dedicated to the city’s patron saint and protector. The original Romanesque church from 14th century was badly damaged in the great earthquake that hit Dubrovnik in 1667, and finally destroyed in a fire that devastated the church on the night between May 24 and 25 in 1706. The only miraculously surviving witness of the fire was the gilded silver statue of the saint holding the 15th-century model of Dubrovnik in his hand. The current church of St Blaise is the work of the Venetian sculptor and master Marino Gropelli built between 1706 and 1715 with it’s richly decorated facade, and the laboriously ornate main altar. The church, centrally located on the main square at the bottom of Stradun near the clock tower is well worth a quick visit, as is the Franciscan Monastery at the top of Stradun near the Pile Gate.

Take the little ferry boat from the old harbour to the island of Lokrum and wander in the olive groves, visit the Renaissance mansion ruins and gardens - site of Game of Thrones filming, the castle/tower on the hill and a few little cafes. Our family also like to go there to swim and sunbathe on days Dubrovnik is busy. We love our walks in the sweet smelling pine forests with beautiful views back over to the old city.

There are 2 beautiful walks we love along the coast up and away from the old town: to Sveti Jakob past the Excelsior and Argentina hotels, and the other in the same direction but take the left fork following the old road (now a pedestrian coastal footpath) to the point where it meets the main road to Cavtat and the airport. It’s a beautiful easy walk and has some lovely benches where you can enjoy the magnificent views of the Adriatic, Lokrum and the old town of Dubrovnik.

When the city gets busy and legs are tired, head to the beach at the apartment. The water is super clear and warm - by October its actually warmer than the air temperature. Looking from above, the right side rents chairs, umbrellas etc and the left side is public. The chairs and drinks/restaurant on the right are worth it in my opinion. We have some beach essentials in the tall cupboard in the hallway.

Got Kids? The Old City Walls - #1 on my List of Things to Do

This is a “must do” for each visitor (2km or 1¼ miles). These are the most complete historical city walls in Europe. The initial walls were created in the 8th century, and the ones you see today result from plans drawn up in the 15th century. They are nearly two kilometers in length, up to 23 meters high and up to 6 meters wide in some places. Access the walls from just inside both of the main gates at Pile and Ploce (and also at Sveti Ivan). The current cost 200kn for adults and 50kn for those under 18. Buy the Dubrovnik card if you're going to more historic sites (online -10%).

Start with a walk along Stradun(the main street), then explore some of its narrow streets and small squares, monumental ramparts and fortresses. Dubrovnik’s numerous museums and galleries contain many of the jewels of Croatian heritage. It’s a city of a unique political and cultural history.

The Monasteries are great insights into history

The main monastic orders have a monastery and church in Dubrovnik including the beautiful Franciscan Monastery with its beautiful open air cloister and pharmacy. The Dominican Monastery is also worth a trip - it exhibits valuable examples of Dubrovnik painting from the 15th and the 16th centuries, as well as sculptures, jewelry, manuscripts and music.

If you're into Maritime History or Beautiful old Costumes...

The Maritime Museum (situated in the fortress Sveti Ivan) is well done, with a number exhibits on permanent display, related to the maritime affairs of Dubrovnik and Croatia on the whole, with a particular emphasis on the history of the Dubrovnik Republic. The Rupe Ethnographical Museum presents traditional occupations and the rural architecture of the region of Dubrovnik, national costumes and hand-made textiles. This is on a high spot in the old city, so a bit of a walk, but well worth a visit.

A performance in the Marin Drzic Theater?

Marin-Drzic Theatre is a wonderful wedding cake-style theatre with wonderful paintings in the old town of Dubrovnik, next to the Rectors Palace and city council chambers. Ask the Tourist Board what’s on. We’ve attended a number of performances of Croatian Klapa music and a fun Opera music night during Carnival and always enjoyed the sense of occasion and live theatre. It is named after the famous Dubrovnik-born comedy writer of the Renaissance period (born in Dubrovnik in 1508, died in Venice in 1567).

Wonderful Walks

Walk (or take the cable car up) to Srd. The walk down takes about 30 minutes and ends in the Pile Square (the Northern gate to the old city) neighborhood just outside of the Old Town walls. There are 2 beautiful walks along the coast up away from the old town: to Sveti Jakob past the Excelsior and Argentina hotels, and the other in the same direction but take the left fork following the old road (now a pedestrian coastal footpath) to the point where it meets the main road to Cavtat and the airport. It’s a beautiful easy walk and has some lovely benches where you can enjoy magnificent views.

Use the Ferries for great self guided tours

As Dubrovnik is on the water, ferry traffic is a key form of transport in this area . The Jadrolinja ferries leave from the new harbour in Gruz (bus #8) and take you out to the Elaphite Islands of Kolocep, Lopud and Sipan(Sudurad) (30-45 mins) - a wonderful day exploring - a very cheap day out. There is also a ferry from the old town harbour across to the nature preserve of Lokrum Island with its Renaissance ruins and beautiful walks in the sweet smelling pines.

Use a sling or backpack if walking the walls

The Dubrovnik walls are a must do, but there are some very long sets of steps to be negotiated. If you have a little one with you, we recommend you use a baby sling or backpack - a stroller would be a problem.

What's Close By the Apartment

Within 300 yards of the apartment you have: - Restaurants and cafes - A bakery with great bread and breakfast/lunch pastries. Locals buy bread every day – if not twice a day - Dubrovnik's best and most beautiful beach. - 2 Grocery/convenience stores - An ATM - The Dubrovnik Art Gallery on Frana Supila in Ploce - Cultural center folklore (national dance Monday and Friday at least in season) - Art studios and taxi rank - Old harbour with boats to Lokrum, Cavtat and tours ... and of course all the restaurants in the old town are pretty close- by anyway.

Don't bring euros or Kuna - use the ATM

Don't take Kuna (the Croatian Currency). There are lots of ATMs and they provide a better rate. Avoid paying in Euros as the local "exchange rate" is never in your favor :)
