Drinks & Nightlife

Uncle Robert Keli'iho'omalu is the legendary and beloved patriarch of the old Kalapana village, and the market takes place at his family compound, located at the south end of the Red Road near the New Kaimu Black Sand Beach. Normally it’s a quiet neighborhood of quaint beach shacks and lush coconut groves, but on Wednesday night it transforms into a huge open-air market bustling with people eager for fresh produce, tasty food, and live music. It’s a lively market full of wonderful sounds, sights, and smells—not to mention lots of friendly aloha spirit—and everyone is welcome.

Sightseeing

Kalapana Gardens
. If you drive straight ahead at the end of route 130 instead of turning left onto the Red Road, you would drive onto a dirt road that goes over old lava flows from the 1980s and as late as 1990. Since then many people have rebuilt their homes or new buildings on top of the cooled lava. It’s fun to bicycle there or take a stroll through the new neighborhood to browse the unique off-grid houses that people have built.
Right now there is NO LAVA flowing. However you can visit the areas where the lava flowed previously, including the 2018 eruption. Experience hiking on some of the newest land on the planet.

Pahoa Village is a small "yesteryear Hawaii" town, known for the century-old buildings that line its sleepy, quiet main street. It’s also known as the “dreadlocks capital” of the Big Island because there’s a large population of hippies and other alternative types who live in the area. Take a stroll on the boardwalks and browse the little shops and art galleries. There are two grocery stores, Malama Market and Island Naturals Health Food, located in the north and south ends of town. A couple of yoga/massage studios and chiropractor. One tattoo parlor. Two museums including a new Volcano Museum near Kaleo’s restaurant.
If you’re hungry, a handful of restaurants offer a variety of cuisines: Japanese, Mexican, Chinese, Thai, Italian and a vegan gelato shop. There are also a couple of pizza joints. In case you carve sweet or need a caffeine fix, Tin Shack bakery or Sirius Coffee are the perfect choices. Kaleo’s Bar & Grill is a nice spot to chill – get a table on their front street deck. Or hang out with the young hippie crowd at Awa Bar for kava drinks or kombucha on tap.
