A great historic pub and our favourite local pub. They serve lunch from 12-2pm and dinner from 6pm. Restaurant quality food at pub prices. The best chicken schnitzel in South Australia (or we think so). Dinner can be quite busy, especially on weekends so best to book a table. Ask for a table in the wine cellar or at least have a look when you go. Also a great spot for a cold beer on a hot day.

Martindale Hall is a Georgian styled sandstone mansion which has significant heritage value in South Australia. Built in 1879 – 1880, it has some 32 rooms and boasts a large cellar of some 7 rooms. The home also had a polo ground, a racecourse, a boating lake and a cricket pitch where the English 11 played at least once. To visit Martindale Hall today is a unique experience of a living museum, a step back in time to the days of gracious living on a large pastoral estate late in the 1800’s to early 1900’s. Where a rumoured 14 servants 4 of which lived in the hall and on call 24 hrs a day looked after the needs of two people, such was the extravagant upper class lifestyle of the wealthy.

This is where the Jesuit priests planted the first grape vines in Clare Valley to make the alter wine. The church finished in 1875 is still in use today. Take a walk around the grounds and through the church. It is a very popular spot for weddings. Wander up to the cellar and try their wines. They are very good. Every February a theatre group perform Shakespeare In the Vines. Worth doing if you are here in February.

The Riesling Trail is a 33km trail that runs from Auburn to just past Clare. Great for walking or biking. There are a number of wineries along the trail or close by. Bike hire is available and you can ride the whole lot or just a section. Originally an old railway line, so is fairly flat. There are a couple of slight climbs but nothing too hard. Your accommodation is located very close to the trail. We quite often ride along the trail to the Sevenhill Pub for lunch and then back again or even just for a walk.

Parks & Nature

Prior to European settlement, the grassy-woodlands and open grasslands provided an abundance of food for the Ngadjuri people. Spring Gully Conservation Park has a steep, undulating terrain that leads into the creek bed of Spring Gully. From Blue Gum Lookout take a walk through grassy woodlands to a seasonal waterfall that plunges from a height of 18 metres after rain. Enjoy a picnic or admire the wildflowers and orchids that bloom in spring. You may even see western grey kangaroos, euros and common brushtail possums.
